Top 5 Moments From Canadian Championships

Didn't get a chance to check out the racing at the Canadian National Championships this weekend? Take a look at FloTrack's top 5 moments from the action in Edmonton.

Cam Levins Defends 5K Title, Finishes 7th In Tactical 1500m

Nike Oregon Project's Cam Levins took the win in the 5K over Bowerman Track Club's Mo Ahmed in a time of 13:51.34, with Ahmed finishing close behind in 13:52.84. The 24-year-old Ahmed made a race of it until 50 meters to go, but could not hold off Levins’ ferocious kick. Luc Bruchet finished 3rd in a time of 14:02.58, but will need to chase the standard of 13:23 if he wants to join Levins and Ahmed in Bejing. Levins came back in the incredibly tactical 1500m finals on Saturday, running to a 7th place finish with a time of 4:07.24, just a second off the win.

Andre De Grasse Wins By A Lot

Andre De Grasse proved he was no joke at this year’s NCAA Championships, winning the 100 in 9.75, and the 200 with a time of 19.58 (both wind aided). This past Friday, he proved that he is the dominant force in the Canadian sprint scene, winning the 100m by nearly a quarter of a second in a time of 9.95. This mark is good for a wind legal PB. Joining De Grasse in Bejing will be Aaron Brown and Justyn Warner. Warner ran the exact IAAF standard of 10.16 to snag the 3rd place spot. With De Grasse advancing to Bejing, one can only hope that he will face-off against collegiate rival Trayvon Bromell, who also qualified to the World Championships by finishing 2nd in the 100m at the USA Outdoor Championships.

Nicole Sifuentes Wins 5K, 1500M

Saucony athlete Nicole Sifuentes pulled off an impressive double, winning the 5K on Thursday evening, and also winning the 1500m on Saturday night. Her best race of the year was at the Payton Jordan Invitational where she ran to an eight second PR of 15:19.15, just enough for the IAAF “A” standard. Prior to this, Sifuentes had been running 15:27-15:30 for the 5K since 2010. Her seasonal best of 4:06.82 is only two seconds off of her 1500m PB as well. Lanni Marchant finished 2nd in the 5K with a time of 16:24.76, while Natasha Labeaud finished 3rd in 16:26.13. Both Marchant and Lebeaud will need big PB’s to join Sifuentes in Bejing, as the IAAF “A” standard in the 5K is 15:20.00.

Brianne Theisen-Eaton Wins 100 hurdles, 2nd In Long Jump.

Heptathlon star Brianne Theisen-Eaton came away victorious in the 100m Hurdles, just a hundredth of a second off of her seasonal best with a time of 13.06. Theisen-Eaton also finished in 2nd place in the long jump with a wind aided mark of 6.48m. The 26-year-old might be the best shot at a gold medal for Canada this summer in Bejing, as her current PB in the heptathlon of 6808 is also a world leading mark.

Fiona Benson Wins Tactical 800m

23-year-old Fiona Benson took the win in the 800m finals on the final day of competition over Nike athlete Melissa Bishop. The race went out in a 66 first lap, but Benson proved to have the strongest kick of the bunch as she closed in a 1:01 final lap to take the win. Both Benson and Bishop will advance to Bejing this August. Third place finisher Jessica Smith will have to chase the "A" standard of 2:01 if she wants to join the duo.
