Mary Cain Will Not Return to Oregon, Remains a Member of the Nike Oregon Project

Mary Cain
of the Nike Oregon Project will not be returning to Oregon.

According to a report in Runner’s World, Cain will live at home with her parents in Bronxville, New York and continue to train as a member of Alberto Salazar’s training group. New Zealand Olympian John Henwood is also working with Cain monitoring workouts twice a week.

Cain, who famously turned pro in high school and became a world championship finalist in the 1500m in 2013, struggled during the 2015 season. After setting American junior records in the 800m and 1500m in 2013 and winning the 3000m at the 2014 World Junior Championships, Cain moved to Oregon after her high school graduation to train with the Portland based Nike training group.

She finished eighth in the 2015 Millrose Games mile after winning in 2014 and shut down the remainder of her indoor season. She returned to the track in April and ran 4:17 in the 1500m at the Oregon Relays. It was one of Cain’s slowest marks in her professional career.

She finished eighth in the 1500m final at the 2015 U.S. Championship, a race she had twice finished as runner-up.

Cain posted the news today on her blog:

After a disappointing year, I knew that I needed a change. For me, that meant returning home to New York (and its bagels) or where it all started. With 2016 being such an important year, it’s a blessing to be able to, as my mom says, "Go back to basics."

Now, I know for the average college kid, being at home doesn’t necessarily sound like living the dream, but it’s really been great! I’ve been taking classes at Fordham University (my dad’s alma mater) and I’m still working towards a Chemistry major.

I am still a member of the Oregon Project and Alberto Salazar is my coach. John Henwood is again helping to oversee my day-to-day training, so I’m extremely lucky to have two knowledgeable and passionate coaches.

Training has been going well and I am enjoying every moment of it. I’ve decided to do some local cross-country races this fall. I’m happy to be lacing up my spikes again.

Throughout my career, I always said the key to running well was keeping the sport fun. With the help of this great NY running community, I am happy to say that I have found that love again! I’m looking forward to a rewarding Indoor and Outdoor season.
