Monaco Start Lists

The 2011 Monaco Diamond League kicks off this evening and as always the races should be very fast! Here are a couple of tidbits that I am looking at on the distance side of things (yes only distance, sorry....fine I'll throw in the 100 too). Btw, the meet is at Stad Louis II....probably my favorite venue on the circuit! Check it out:

Men's 5k - We've talked about this race a couple things this week because there will be twelve sub-13 minute guys stepping to the line. This will include four of the top American's all-time in Bernard Lagat (#1, 12:54), Chris Solinsky (#2, 12:55), Matt Tegenkamp (#5....can you believe he's #5 at 12:58 now?!?) and Galen Rupp (#7, 13:06...Rupp is the cut-off point for Americans that are sub-13:10...we have 5 under 13 but only 7 under 13:10, interesting). So yes, THE AMERICAN RECORD IS ON THE LINE HERE! This is going to be awesome.  The race will also feature the three top 5k runners in the world in 2011 with Imane Merga (12:54), Isiah Koech (12:54) and Vincent Chepkok (12:55). All three athletes hit this marks at the Rome Diamond League back on May 26, 2011.

Men's 800 - David Rudisha will run under 1:43 today....boys get ready to ride the train! No one in this field other than the world record holder has run under 1:44 this year. Khadevis Robinson has been on fire this season, but I know he questioned how fast he was hoping to go in Monaco. He says he's maybe only got a few real fast races left in there so will use one of them up today? Nick Symmonds will find out where he's at and Olympic 1500 meter champ Asbel Kiprop will unleash those lanky legs to a quick time.

Men's Steeplechase - Always quick in Monaco, there are four guys who've gone sub-8:10 this year. Two guys in this race are two of the best we've ever seen in Paul Koech and 2009 World Champ Ezekiel Kemboi (who made 8:00 look easy when he won Worlds in Berlin!). Koech did not finish in the top three or make the team at the Kenya Championships so I am guessing he'll have something to prove. Olympic and 2011 Kenyan Champ Brimin Kipruto (8:00PR) will also be a force. There are two Americans in this one with Dan Huling and Billy Nelson. Huling (8:13PR) made big breakthroughs here in 2008 when he PRed in 8:20 and then ran 8:17 last year. Nelson will run here for the first time and could be the next American to be sub-8:20 which he's been probably itching to do for some time after running 8:21 in 2008! Other to note is Matt Hughes, the Canadian 2x NCAA steeple champ from Louisville. Hughes has to get under the B standard of 8:32.0 to make it to Daegu for his country but he'll have a good shot to break his 8:24 PR and maybe get that A standard being that he's racing here in Monaco!

Men's 100 - Six men who have run under 10 seconds, 2 that have run under 9.8 (Frater and Rodgers) and a Frechman who's exciting all of Europe. But really, is all about USAIN BOLT! He's only run 9.91 this season, but maybe this will be his breakout race and he'll send a message to fellow countryman Asafa Powell and break his meet record of 9.82? We shall see.

Men's 1500 - Not a Diamond League event this time, but it could be based on talent. Two big season debuts here....Medhi Baala of France (3:28PR a while back, does he still have it??) and Abubaker Kaki (3:39PR....is he ducking Mr. David Rudisha?? Might be smart with Worlds still over a month away). Silas Kiplagat is ranked number one in the world, but will you please take a look at this 1500 world list...there an A next to his name, that means altitude! Has the #1 time in the world ever been at altitiude??? That is just dumb and this guy could run something stupid today (that was an intelligent sentence). Ryan Gregson and Andy Wheating meet again where there shared a magical night a year ago and no, it wasn't over a candle lit dinner. The two young starts ran huge PRs with Wheating's 3:30 and Gregson's 3:31. Could we have another Aussie/American duo this year with Matt Centrowitz and Jeff Riseley. Other names I like- Nick Willis, Augustine Choge, Deresse Mekonnen.

Women's 1500 - Based on season's best times, Morgan Uceny is only ranked #8 in this race...but can you bet against someone who has been undefeated since the US Championships! Uceny is destroying people over the final 100 meters over races lately and she is coming off of a 800 meter PR of 1:58 in Lignano so she's defintely in prime condition to keep the stream alive. The funny thing here, there are three Americans in the that have run faster than Morgan in the past....Shannon Rowbury (4:00), Jenny Barringer-Simpson (3:59) and Christin Wurth-Thomas (3:59). All in all, the 1500 meters has been slow throughout 2011. This was an event back in 2009 that I thought was going to be exploding with sub-4:00 marks throughout the world and new American Records. It still has that potential but it just hasn't happened yet. Monaco could provide some headway into that territory though. Its going to be like a World Championships final out there, as it usually is, with Gelete Burka, Maryum Yuself Jamal, Lisa Dobriskey and a totally of 5 other woman outside of the Americans that have run 4:02 of faster (that makes a total of 12 at that speed!). Oh yeah, and the dark horse....Shalane Flanagan!! Well, she's probably not going to win this race, but she has an opportunity to PR....something she hasn't done on the outdoor track since the Olympic final 10k in 2008. The mark she'd have to beat...4:05.86.

Sit back, relax, enjoy....and come back to Flotrack afterwards for all the post-race coverage. Go get 'em Alex!

P.S. Did I mention it's Steven Hooker's 2011 debut? Yeah, he's the 2009 World Champion...check him out here talking with Alex!
