New Haven’s Gagne Claims Unprecedented Three National Scholar-Athlete Awards in Division II
In addition, 311 individuals receive All-Academic status for the track & field seasons

NEW ORLEANS – New Haven’s Shannon Gagne and New Mexico Highlands’ Jillisa Grant were named on Friday as Scholar Athletes of the Year in Division II for the 2011 track & field seasons by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The group represents collegiate track & field’s best in both athletics and academics. In addition, 311 were tapped as USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees.
Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest in individual events at the most recent NCAA Championships. Those who earn multiple individual championship titles rank higher in the tie-breaking process, and cumulative GPA is weighed as the final tiebreaker to establish a winner. Separate awards are given to track athletes and field athletes for the indoor and outdoor seasons, resulting in four categories.

Outdoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year –
Shannon Gagne, New Haven
Gagne, a graduate student from Meriden, Conn., is the first in USTFCCCA history to win three National Scholar-Athlete awards in a single track & field year as her academic and athletic performance throughout 2011 placed her ahead of the rest. Holding a 3.97 cumulative GPA and majoring in national security, Gagne won NCAA indoor titles in the 200 meters, 400 meters, and long jump. Outdoors, Gagne claimed additional crowns in the 200 and 400.
Earlier this week, Gagne was named by CoSIDA as the year’s all-around college division Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year. Gagne was also the USTFCCCA’s National Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2011.
Outdoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year –
Jillisa Grant, New Mexico Highlands
Grant, a junior from Spanish Town, Jamaica, was the NCAA Division II outdoor long jump champion in 2011 and holds a 3.85 cumulative GPA in human performance.

311 Earn All-Academic Status
In addition to the Scholar Athletes of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced the women’s 2011 Division II All-Academic Track & Field team. A total of 311 student-athletes representing 80 institutions compose the group.
Grand Valley State led all squads with 20 team members named to the All-Academic list. Slippery Rock followed with 11 nods. In third place, Shippensburg, Ashland, Southern Connecticut, and Western State checked in with nine honorees.
NCAA champions Lindsay Lettow (Central Missouri), Monica Kinney (Grand Valley State), Barbara Szabo (Western State), Andria Nussey (Angelo State), Christa Bergmann (Fort Hays State), Lauren Stelten (Minnesota State), Cassie Mitchell (Adams State), Shermaine Williams (Johnson C. Smith), Monika Gruszecki (Western Washington), and Neely Spence (Shippensburg) joined Gagne and Grant on the All-Academic list.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met an NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying mark in an individual or relay event at some point in either indoor or outdoor seasons.
Those institutions given All-Academic Team status will be named on Tuesday, August 9 (women) and Thursday, August 11 (men).
