IAAF World Championships Day 1 Preview

Women's Long Distance Takes Center Stage

The women's marathon and women's 10,000 meters are the lone events awarding medals on the first day of Daegu's World Championships.

The marathon features defending New York City Marathon champion Edna Kiplagat. The 10,000 meters features World Cross Country champion Vivian Cheruiyot and Olympic gold medalist Meseret Defar. Can Olympic and World Cross Country bronze medalist Shalane Flanagan put the USA on the medal stand?

Event-by-event...

Morning Session

8:00 PM ET – Women's Marathon
Edna Kiplagat, the defending New York City Marathon champion, faces off against Aselefech Mergia, the Dubai Marathon champion, and Yoshimi Ozaki, the Yokohama Marathon champion and course record holder.
USA entrants: Collen DeReuck, Zoila Gomez, Alisa McKaig, Tera Moody, Kathy Newberry

9:00 PM ET – Decathlon 100 meters
The USA's Ashton Eaton is one of the fastest decathletes in history, and looks to get off to a rocket start in his World Championship pursuit. Both are in heat 1.

9:05 PM ET – Women's Discus qualifying round, Group A
Favorite Nadine Müller of Germany is in this group, along with the USA’s Gia Lewis-Smallwood. 62.00 meters is an automatic qualifier to the finals, plus anyone else in the top 12 (between the two groups).

9:35 PM ET – Women's Steeplechase heats
The top four in each heat automatically qualify to the finals, plus the next three fastest.
Heat 1 – The USA’s Bridget Franek will see her greatest challenge from Mercy Njoroge (Kenya) and Habiba Ghribi (Tunisia).
Heat 2 – America’s Emma Coburn is here, along with Sofia Assefa (Ethiopia) and Lydia Rotich (Kenya).
Heat 3 – American Stephanie Garcia is in the same heat with heavy favorite Milcah Chemos Cheywa (Kenya).

9:40 PM ET – Men's Pole Vault qualifying round
The 12 best athletes will get to the finals, with an automatic qualifier at 5.70 meters.
Group A has the USA’s Mark Hollis as well as oft-injured Aussie star Steve Hooker.
Group B has Americans Jeremy Scott and Derek Miles as well as the favorite, Renaud Lavillenie (France).

10:00 PM ET – Decathlon Long Jump
This is another Ashton Eaton specialty. Trey Hardee, who set his PR in this event in May, looks to hold it close here.

10:25 PM ET – Women's Discus qualifying round, Group B
This group includes the best American hopes in Aretha Thurmond and Stephanie Brown Trafton, along with top threat Li Yanfeng (China). Remember, 62.00 or better is an automatic qualifier.

10:30 PM ET – Women's 100 meters preliminary round
All of the better sprinters have a bye past this round.

11:05 PM ET – Men's 800 meters heats
The first three in each heat qualify to the semifinals, along with the next six fastest.
Heat 1 – The USA’s Nick Symmonds should have no trouble advancing; Canada’s Andrew Ellerton has a good chance as well.
Heat 2 – Jackson Kivuva (Kenya) and Yuriy Borzakovskiy (Russia) are favored.
Heat 3 – Co-favorite Abubaker Kaki (Sudan) starts off his medal quest here.
Heat 4 – International rookie Charles Jock (USA) lines up right next to David Rudisha (Kenya). Don’t sweat it, kid.
Heat 5 – Not much star power here, which makes it an interesting heat to watch.
Heat 6 – America’s Khadevis Robinson should advance easily.

11:50 PM ET – Decathlon Shot Put
This is one of Trey Hardee's strengths, and one of Ashton Eaton's weaknesses. Has Eaton improved enough in the shot to have a chance at the gold? Pay special attention to who is leading after this event. Since Eaton and Hardee are relatively equal over the last seven events (in aggregate), whoever is on top through three events has an advantage.

11:55 PM ET – Men's 100 meters preliminary round
As with the women, this is the “scrub” round.

Evening Session

7:00 AM ET – Decathlon High Jump
Ashton Eaton recently had a breakthrough in this event.

7:05 AM ET – Women's 400 meters heats
The first four in each heat plus the next four fastest athletes will qualify to the semifinals.
Heat 1 – Allyson Felix kicks off her four-gold quest right here. Novlene Williams-Mills (Jamaica) should also get through.
Heat 2 – The USA’s Jessica Beard is lined up next to 2011 world leader Ana Kapachinskaya (Russia); both should get through.
Heat 3 – Antonina Krivoshapka (Russia) and Rosemarie Whyte (Jamaica) should lead this.
Heat 4 – Diamond League leader Amantle Montsho (Botswana) lines up next to the USA’s Francena McCorory.
Heat 5 – America’s Sanya Richards-Ross runs in this heat; will she continue her improvement?

7:30 AM ET – Men's Hammer Throw qualifying round, Group A
The top 12 in the two groups will qualify to the finals, and a 77.00 meter throw will get you there automatically. The USA’s big hope, Kibwe Johnson, is in this group along with co-favorites Krisztian Pars and Koji Murofushi.

8:00 AM ET – Women's 10,000 meters Final
Vivian Cheruiyot, the World Cross Country champion and defending 5000 meter World Champion, looks to run the first end of a winning 5k/10k double. Her main rivals appear to be many-time Olympic and World champion Meseret Defar, defending World Champion Linet Masai, the Oregon Track Club's Sally Kipyego, and the USA's Shalane Flanagan. Other US runners are Kara Goucher and Jen Rhines.

8:15 AM ET – Women's Long Jump qualifying round
The top 12 will qualify to the final, and 6.75 meters will get you there automatically. Group A includes Americans Janay DeLoach and gold medal favorite Brittney Reese. Group B has the USA’s Funmi Jimoh

8:45 AM ET – Men's 100 meters heats
Superstar Usain Bolt will make his first on-track appearance at the Worlds here, along with Americans Walter Dix, Justin Gatlin, and Trell Kimmons, and Canada’s Justyn Warner.

9:00 AM ET – Men's Hammer Throw qualifying round, Group B
The USA’s Michael Mai is in this group as well as Canada’s Jim Steacy.

9:40 AM ET – Decathlon 400 meters
The final event of the first day is another Ashton Eaton strength.
