Walker's Pace: USATF Shines Spotlight on Centrowitz

Friday, September 16, 2011

World 1,500 meter bronze medalist Matthew Centrowitz - who also claimed the NCAA and USA titles at that distance this season - is currently being feaured on the USATF web site.

While his broze medal may have surprised everyone else, Centro tells USATF it didn't surprise him.

"It didn't surprise me too much," he said. "Once I made the final I had the goal of winning a medal and that was what I had dreamed about. My coaches and I knew I was capable of winning a medal."

He also mentions that he will actually miss running cross country this season (he used up his XC eligibility last fall), but the break will serve him well in preparation for the 2012 indoor and outdoor seasons, plus the 2012 Olympic Trials, which will be hosted by the University of Oregon (sidenote - get your tickets now!).

A couple of Centro's former teammates have also been busy on the international scene since the IAAF World Championships. Galen Rupp just broke the American record in the 10,000 meters Friday at the Diamond League season finale in Brussells, Belgium.

From the USATF:

Rupp's third-place time of 26 minutes, 48.00 seconds crushed Chris Solinsky's time of 26:59.60, which he ran in 2010. Rupp, a two-time USA champion in the event, previously held a personal best of 27:10.74.

Also, recent graduate A.J. Acosta is slated to represent the United States in the two miles this weekend at the Great North City Games in Newcastle, England.

The Great North City Games is an exhibition "street games" track meet pitting the United States versus Great Britain and Northern Ireland in select track and field events.
