Distance Carnival night at Drake Relays

 

            DES MOINES, Iowa – The No. 14 University of Arkansas men’s track and field team opened its competition schedule Thursday at the 103^rd running of the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. As part of the event-opening Distance Carnival, the Razorbacks collected a pair of personal-best efforts at 10,000 meters from Cameron Efurd and Layne Nixon and a top-10 result from David Flynn in the 5,000 meters.

            Running at 10,000 meters for the first time since the 2011 SEC Championships, Efurd clocked in with a career-best time of 29:57.93 and finished in sixth place. He knocked nearly 50 seconds off his previous best of 30:47.16 which he ran at last year’s conference meet. Nixon crossed in 13^th place with a personal-best time of 30:29.41, surpassing his previous best of 31:13.15.

            In the night’s finale, Flynn took a break from the 3,000-meter steeplechase to post a top-10 showing at 5,000 meters. He finished the race in a time of 14:24.19, good for seventh place. It was his first outdoor race at 5,000 meters with his only previous experience at the distance coming earlier this season at the SEC Indoor Championships.

            The 2012 Drake Relays continues Friday with preliminary rounds of the 110-meter hurdles, 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay; finals in the 4x200, 4x800 and 4x1,600 relays; and field action in the high jump, pole vault, long jump and  javelin.
