UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -  The Richmond men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2013 season on Friday when they once again host the Spider Alumni Open. The 12th annual running of the event will be held at Mechanicsville's Pole Green Park in suburban Richmond.

The men's 5k race will begin at 5:00 p.m., with the women's 2-Mile race to follow at 5:30 p.m. In addition to current Spiders and a number of the program's alumni who will return for the race, Richmond will also welcome George Mason, VCU, Duquesne, Hampton and William & Mary to Friday’s event.

After finishing third at last year's Atlantic 10 Championship, the Richmond women were ranked first in a preseason vote by the league's 13 head coaches. The Spiders returns it’s top two finishers from last year's team that turned in a third-place finish at the conference championship, including senior standout Jill Prentice who finished third overall last year and became the Spiders' first-ever top female conference finisher when she won the individual title in 2011. Joining Prentice on the starting line will be junior Clare Moretz who is coming off her 21st overall finish at last years Championship.

The Richmond men, who were projected to finish sixth in the league, return junior Andrew Valenski who led the Spider men placing ninth overall in the A-10 Championships and senior Ryan Lee who was the second Spider to cross the finish line, placing 36th.

Additionally, for the first time we will be streaming the races live.  Can’t make it to Pole Green Park on Friday?  Watch the live video stream here.
