Mo Farah Wins Bupa Great North Run

Mo Farah won the Great North Run on Sunday in Newcastle, becoming the first British man to win the half marathon since 1985. Farah’s time of 60:00 bested his previous 13.1 personal best by 10 seconds.

Farah had to fight off Mike Kigen in the final meters in a sprint finish to secure the victory over his former training partner. The double Olympic champion beat a field on Sunday that included Olympic marathon champion Stephen Kiprotich and Tariku Bekele, both of whom were unable to hang with the top group after a quick first four miles.

The race concludes a bumpy season for Farah that included a bunch of missed time and a strange fainting incident. Farah did not participate in the Diamond League until Birmingham, but at that meet he set the British record in the two-mile, 8:07.85. Combined with victories in the 5,000 and 10,000 at the European Championships, as well as today’s result, make Farah once again formidable heading into 2015.
