UPDATE: Team Run Eugene hosted a last chance 1500m race on Sunday where Eric Avila and Sam Prakel improved their seed times.
As a result we updated the descending order list below.
When looking at the current descending order lists for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, the men’s 1500m could have some notable names missing from this year’s field, including Andrew Wheating (Oregon Track Club), Cristian Soratos (adidas) and Mac Fleet (Oregon Track Club).
This past month, we have seen many professional and collegiate 1500m fields fail to run fast enough to attain the Trials standard of 3:38.00.
Below are how some of the notable Olympic Trials standard chase races played out:
3:37.36 - Johnny Gregorek, MATTERED
3:37.52 - Robby Andrews, didn’t matter since he already had a qualifier
3:37.08 - Graham Crawford, MATTERED
3:37.46 - Johnny Gregorek, didn’t matter since he already had a qualifier
3:37.81 - Matthew Centrowitz, didn’t matter since he already had a qualifier
There have been nine meets, yet only four new Trials standards achieved. The last day to improve marks is this Sunday, and it looks like some high-profile athletes could be on the outside looking in, pending scratches/field expansion.
Below is the latest list of Trials entries. This weekend, two-time Olympian Andrew Wheating, 2015 NCAA Indoor runner-up Cristian Soratos, and two-time NCAA champion Mac Fleet will hope for multiple scratches and for USATF to expand the fields past the 3:38 automatic-qualifier mark.
The stated field size for the men's 1500m is 30; however, per USATF guidelines, 30 is an approximate field size—NOT a minimum—and can be adjusted at USATF's discretion.
From USATF's Website:
"For each event, the approximate field size (not the minimum) and number of rounds are shown. Also shown are the Automatic standards that will be used for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. All verified entries who have met the 'Automatic' standard within the prescribed period and at a bona fide meet (see guidelines below), shall be qualified to participate in the U.S. Olympic Trials. Additional verified entries from the rank order list of those who have entered and declared shall be invited to participate in the Trials in order to fill the field in an event(s) where there are an insufficient number of athletes with the 'Automatic' standard. An invitation will be extended to these additional persons based on verified entries in their performance rank order."
*Sean McGorty's mark is a mile time, which is eligible if under 3:54.00
