A large truck drove through a Bastille Day celebration in Nice, France, late Thursday night, leaving a reported 60 dead and at least 100 wounded in a terrorist attack. No one has claimed responsibility yet for the largest terror attack on French soil since last November's attacks in Paris that led to 130 deaths and 368 people wounded.
Nice is the closest major French city to the principality of Monaco, which will host the Diamond League Herculis Meeting on Friday, July 15. Nice Côte d'Azur Airport serves as the hub for those flying in and out of Monaco. Considering its proximity to the attacks, security is expected to be heightened for tomorrow's track event, if it happens at all.
Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille Prison, which led to the French Revolution. Roads were closed off to allow crowds to watch fireworks along the Mediterranean coast, which means the driver negotiated through several road blocks to execute the attack.
Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi asked residents to remain calm in the wake of the attack.
Tony Molina, a witness, told CNN he watched the attack from his hotel room. "There was still a crowd of people, and then you just see this big white panel truck. I couldn't see the driver, but it just kept going at different angles from left to right at 25 to 30 miles an hour," he said.
