Texas head track coach Mario Sategna has requested and was granted an indefinite leave of absence from his coaching responsibilities at the university, according to the Austin American-Statesman

Sprint and hurdles coach Tonja Buford-Bailey and field events coach Ty Sevin were named interim acting co-head coaches in Sategna's absence.

No further details or a timetable for Sategna's return were provided.

Sategna is returning from Rio de Janeiro after working as the throws coach for the United States Olympic Team. The summer was highlighted by Sategna coaching former Texas greats Ryan Crouser and Michelle Carter to Olympic gold in the shot put.

While at Texas, Sategna's teams have been extremely successful. Sategna was an assistant coach for 10 years before becoming the head coach of the combined men's and women's program in 2013.

The Longhorn men and women captured their second straight Big 12 outdoor conference titles last May. Both teams also swept the Big 12 indoor championships in February. Sategna has helped guide six NCAA champions on the Longhorn squad and several former Longhorns on the Olympic stage, notably Trey Hardee and Marquis Goodwin.
