In a wild finish, Kate Grace outkicked superstar Sifan Hassan in the women's 3000 meters at the UW Indoor Preview. Her 8:47.26 clocking breaks the Dempsey facility record, and is just 0.08 seconds off the U.S. top ten all-time list.
Grace's NorCal Distance teammate Kim Conley rabbited the race through 1600 meters, taking a pack of Grace, Sifan Hassan, Leah O'Connor, and Brie Felnagle past 1600 in 4:42. Hassan opened up a large lead over the last kilometer, clicking off the same 70-second quarters. But in the last 300-meter lap, Hassan started to rig and Grace showed off her 800-meter speed, walking down Hassan with a huge kick. Check out the photo above to see a scared Hassan seeing Grace over her shoulder.
This was Hassan's first race in a Nike Oregon Project uniform. The 24-year-old from the Netherlands was fifth in the Olympic 1500m final and the 1500m world indoor champion in 2016. It was an extremely impressive win for Grace--who made the Olympic 800m final--as Hassan has run 8:29 for 3K. Hassan was second in 8:50, and Felnagle was third in 8:52. 13-year-old Grace Ping was 13th in 9:43.
