Aliphine Tuliamuk and Chris Derrick won the 2018 USATF Half Marathon Championships in Pittsburgh.
Aliphine Tuliamuk and Chris Derrick emerged victorious in close finishes at the USATF Half Marathon Championships today in Pittsburgh.
Tuliamuk led the race wire-to-wire and won in 1:10:04, though Sara Hall nearly surprised her at the finish. At halfway, Tuliamek held a 100-meter lead over Hall and Rio Olympic triathlon champion Gwen Jorgensen, with Rochelle Kanuho not far behind, but Hall pulled away over the last few miles to finish within three seconds of Tuliamuk in 1:10:07.
The victory marked Tuliamuk's eighth national title and first in her HOKA NAZ Elite kit; she signed with the Flagstaff-based group in January of this year. The run was also a season's best and the fourth-fastest time of her career.

Derrick's win marked his first national title since winning three straight USATF XC titles in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
Parker Stinson led the entirety of the race, as Derrick and reigning USATF XC champion Leonard Korir of the U.S. Army followed closely behind. Derrick waited until the final mile to make his move and was able to hold off Stinson by a single second, 1:02:37 to 1:02:38.
