A lot of people may not know that the US's fastest collegiate miler of all time is coaching at Baylor, a Baptist University down in Waco, TX. He ran 3:50.34 at Oslo, Norway his senior year in 1981 (still 7th fastest American all-time). He is also the only athlete in NCAA history to earn runner up honors 3 years in a row in the 1500m. Harbour talks about the race where he ran the fastest collegiate time ever, how nerves play a part in racing, and aspects of running that have carried over from being an athlete to coaching.

Watch Todd's collegiate record race in the 1981 Dream Mile HERE (he finishes 5th). Harbour broke the US record in this race, but Steve Scott finished ahead of him.

I'm sure the Africans don't mean to have killed mile running, but at the top level this is what they've done. Pretty sad that to find great mile races, you have to dig back through the archives of the 70s & 80s, but boy is it worth it!!!

Wow. I am glad I clicked on this. Great interview. He's definitely a coach I'd love to run for.

Todd is old school big time.If you were'nt around in the 80's to witness some of the best mile races you can't even begin to imagine how awsome this time is that he ran.It will be awhile before a collegiate breaks that mark.On the other hand with the way American distance running is improving never say never.
