To Mr Jack and Daniels below you two are idiots.... do you have no respect for this man. I am guessing you are some stupid high school or college kids get a life and bother someone else.

Dear, Jack Daniels

I bet you were the man in college, with a name like that you were probably pretty fratty.
Sincerely,

Do not just rely on the schools. The kids are in school 8 hours (tops). Get the kids out running and playing.
The color system sounds fine except too many wussies would be concerned that it would be too competitive. God forbid.

Simply Simon, it sounds like you reveled in the girls's weight gain.

I was a 2nd grade teacher for ten years. My second to last year I took my class outside to run every morning They had worked up to a mile. Even one of my girls who tipped the scales at 130. Then came the day 6 months later when a different chunky kid complained enough to mom and dad and they kept calling the school. I was told to stop immediately, despit proof that their test scores were higher with daily exercise. I recently saw the girls who whined and complained about the running (It's been 4 years now) and she was pushing 250 lbs. in 6th grade.

Its Gym, not PE 3 years ago

Gym is pathetic these days. I tested out of it the last two years I was in high school, because it was a useless waste of time and I was already a varsity athlete.

As far as the shorts go, that would never be allowed these days. It would hurt the white shorts feelings. Even if it was forced through, they would just graduate to the next color every year no matter how you did on your tests. Fat kids who couldn't possibly hope to compete would get gold shorts for being most improved or some such nonsense.

I am a PE Teacher K-8 and let me tell you, parents complain if you run in class or even do push ups. I agree with Mr. Daniels 100% but school districs and states put limits on what you can teach now in Physcial Education. This is part to blame. But on the positive note we do the Presidental Physical Fitness Test and also run everyday in class. But it took 2 years to convince the parents that it was good for them. Now it is expected.

Cheers!

It's true, my high school PE class was a joke, a complete waste of time. Motivation, there was none. So is this lack of fitness a problem? And if it is, how do we fix it?

Good ole Jack.

Good Job Jack, I agree ... if the athletes that I coach today (at the HS and post college levels) understand how life was so different back in the 60's and early 70's! General fitness levels are lower today ... period. The "build-up" period can take a 1/3 of the season ... the kids are not fit ...from grade 3 in elementary school .... lets "teach" Physical Education again in schools all across America! T&F;will benefit greatly too!

Thanks to Saucony for sponsoring this! And FloTrack, you guys rule, as usual! With regards to JD, I could not agree more and I believe this is an under-recognized problem. Cara, my childhood was the same way: playing outside until dinner. My siblings and I got several hours of "play fitness" in each day. I wonder why this is so different than today when the same distractions were present for kids our age (I'm also 21) growing up.

Awesome interview. My dad will love this. And he is right all around.

I love the banner! Jack has this right, when I was younger ( I'm only 21), my parents basically put me outside to play till dinner. If I was lucky, I would be able to play kick the can after dinner in the dark. My sisters and I played kicked the can all way up to middle school by then we were in organized sports. I really think this helped with the development of us as athletes ( they are soccer players-I guess all that kicking the can contributed).

This summer, I was actually a trainer for sixth graders wanting to run cross country in the fall for the middle school, and it was weird to me that these kids did not play. I actually made it part of thier training to play some type of game 30 mins. aday. I really think it contributed to their fitness.
