Oregon Guy and AC are definitely correct. I believe she could get 3rd if things work out perfectly, otherwise I don't see her making top 3. Desi and Shalane will definitely finish in front of her. Kara said not 5 days ago that it will be a pack of runners, aka she won't run an honest pace. Just like Boston, she will complain that the early pace was too slow and blame others. Those who are really "into" running understand this. Her only chance is to run an honest pace from the start but she won't risk it yet she'll risk getting out kicked at the end. Shame on her.

Leaving Alberto and moving from Oregon 3 months before the trials. I said she won't make top 3 and now I am beyond convinced. Peaked and cooked. Desi and 2 others will beat her at the trials, bet on it.

That is why I agree with Kevin or whoever it is. Before Boston she said she had plenty of time and was in great shape! Then came the excuses. Now running the 10,000 at the WC and doing crappy while running injured. Sorry, I will get ripped as others have on here, but she IS going to have a hard time making the team. Desi and Flanagan have better chances than her. The ? is, what has she done lately? January is going is going to be pretty tough on her.

Yeah, kinda agree. Somewhat overrated and I too predict she won't make top 3 in the OLY Marathon Trials. Of course I said this before Desi uncranked one in Boston last spring. The pressure is on Kara and I think she's going to crack. Just my humble opinion.

I disagree. She did not have a pretty damn good day.
Mark wants facts, according to his post in the part one interview. How is that factual? That's a damn good day? Really?

Fact: She talks toooooooo much and does not produce. In high school, we would say let your feet do the talkin'.
Fact: She is a longggggg way off from breaking 2:20 and being the best in the world. But it is a fact that she talks about it like she's only 30 seconds away from breaking 2:20. The best in the world is under 2:20, right? So then, if she wants to be the best in the world, she'll have to break 2:20, make sense?
Fact: As others have said, she is not gracious to those who finish in front of her. Did you ask the 9 ladies in front of her if they had a great day? No, and I bet they were hurting just as badly and some of them, maybe worse. So then, they could have run a lot faster too.
Fact: I heard food poisoning was possibly a factor. I've had food poisoning and if you "really" have it, you can't run that fast and not have problems earlier in the race. Meaning, it doesn't all of a sudden kick in at 30k. Actually, you'd be hurting so much that you would most likely not even start. Throwing up? We've all done that. I set my pr and threw up several times, so what? I threw up the night before my first marathon, during the race (3 times), and just about 2 seconds after I crossed the finish line. Again, so what?
Fact: When you talk as much as she does and don't come close to producing the results, it's considered worse than bragging Mark, because she really hasn't even done it.
Fact: You can ban me from this site, I don't care Mark. But it is a fact that you and Ryan majorly favor Kara, but you'd never admit it. I was on "another site" and the site owner actually emailed me and said my posts are great and it shows people the other side of the coin, whether they agree or not. Why, because most people are very misinformed. Question Mark: Why did Kara get the bronze in Osaka? If I have to explain it, then you're not very well informed.
Fact: Although it's your site, it doesn't justify your (Mark's) post because you own half of the sandbox. What's your pr Mark and what makes your opinion universal? I've broken 2:30, does that mean my opinion is better than a 3 hour marathoners? Not to me it doesn't. I listen to what's being said, not necessarily who's saying.
Fact: Even if you made this a registered site only, people still have their opinions. Why does Kara's threads have special rules?
Fact: You banned me from posting on thread number one and you can do the same here, it doesn't make you right, only childish for favoring one runner in particular over dozens of others. Does that have to do with her looks?

Even with it being YOUR site, you can't "discriminate" against this poster or that poster, believe it or not. p.s. To those who are questioning the 2nd fastest woman in American history title in her BIO, I believe that is because she is the 2nd fastest for an American woman to debut at the marathon. The BIO IS very misleading and no, I didn't make that post questioning, but I agree with the poster.

Hey, David, actually the owners of the site CAN discriminate against any and all posters if they want. There is no law that requires the owner of a web site to run anything that they don't want to. As the owner of a corporate web site, I know.

The fact that your long-winded rant was posted on the site goes to show that there is some objectivity to the site. But you have no right to post. And that's a fact (unlike most of the opinionated drivel you were spouting).
Oh, and congratulations, Kara, and I can't wait to see more from you in the future.

DO NOT START YOUR FAMILY YET. It would be a huge mistake to take a serious break coming off of a poor performance where you and your coaches are left scratching your heads. I mean that as a compliment. You are capable of medaling in these events and anything less should be a disappointment to a great competitor like yourself. If you take time off now it will haunt you until you figure it out. Get a good one under your belt and then start the family. As of now, your debut was your best performance and it makes it look like you and your coaches are NOT learning and making the necessary adjustments. Desiree Davila and her coaches seem to make the adjustments that make her better every time out. This is what you need to do.
Good luck and keep learning. You are going to be the next great one.

I just want to know why you care that much. You are either:
a HUGE runner dork, like world or warcraft style, or you have nothing better to do. Most likely it's both. Your work must suck though, so congrats on your exciting, lucrative career.
You must think very highly of your 2:30 marathon to be able to rant and rave about kara goucher. It's a little hypocritical in my opinion that you would tell someone to have an open mind. You're the one throwing out facts and telling people that their opinions are wrong.

Who is this sub 2:30 marathoner negative guy? If you don't want to hear Kara talk about her races afterwards, then don't log on. I find it very interesting to listen to all the athletes speak about their races. I think most others on here also do. It takes guts to speak after you are disappointed.

Why do some people want to get nasty at people who put it out on the line to try to be one of the top runners in the world. It is psychologically amusing.
Kara told it like it is. She was confident. She went for it. As happens quite often in the marathon, it didn't quite work out. She was disappointed, but in the end, 10th in the world. I have to hand it to Kara. Congratulations on the dedication and effort you put forth, and I hope you keep talking to the camera whether you are pleased or disappointed. Hope to see you at the Jerome meet in the future.

you have to understand the fact that we have only a hand full of good coaches and a stadium of sub-standard ones. the pool of runners we pull from become very small because of this. i think this will change as more information becomes available thru the net and young runners and parents will question training that isn't backed up by proven methods. give it time and i think thing will change in the next 4 or 5 years for distance running in the US.

I agree Kip. We have abundant resources and training facilities that are second to none. We have the top scientists (Dr. Dave Martin, Dr. Jack Daniels,etc.). We, in my humble opinion, have inferior coaches, compared to Kenyans, Russians, Chinese, Japanese, etc. Our runners themselves are the product of the parents that didnt keep score in soccer games; with the exception of Kara. She has the heart of a lion and proved it in NY against Paula.

I am sooooo jealous of you americans! I am sure this girl is making tons of money a year and with all the facilities she has! With only the budget she has, I know we could make a 100 strong runners here in kenya.

Running is not easy, you are a good runner Kara just be patient and keep working hard, it will pay off one day. Don't have too high expectations, just train hard and you will win easy.

I don't know, call me crazy, but top three finishes at Boston and NYC, and 10th at worlds.... Not very many people have a better record than that.
For those of us who run, and those of us who say they run, did you come out on top every time when you started a new event? How about racing against the best in the world?

I like Kara and am always routing for her to do well, but I also kinda think she and her coach almost set her up for all the harsh criticism that comes whenever she underperforms. They are always so over the top with the "ready to do something big", "could be the best in the world" kinda comments in interviews. I know the athletes have to believe in themselves and not put any boundaries up, but I'm not sure that means you have to continually put it out there for everyone else too. I guess it's just "selling" the athlete - problem is that when you don't deliver it comes back to bite you. Oh well, hopefully they'll be right one of these times! Best of luck to Kara in the future.

I realistically picked her to finish 12th. She went top 10 and her time was a little better than I figured too. What's Kara got to do to get a pat on the back? She hasn't run a lot of marathons, she's pretty darn close to the best we've ever had, and if memory serves me well, she's a lot quicker in the 5K-10K business than most or even all 30-ish American marathoners. She had a pretty damn good day!

VERY classy show, to go through with these interviews after what was clearly a taxing event (for her and many other top flight runners), and an emotionally difficult time (being on your feet and conversing after a sub 2:30 is an accomplishment in itself, but handling media peppering with discernment and diplomacy while in early stages of recovery is amazing, and very gracious.)

Best to both Gouchers as they work their way through their personal plans and their training over the next year and a half. Thanks to the FloTrack crew for providing us these snippets so soon after the event.

Kara, Congrats on 10th overall ! We all understand that you really wanted to medal at Worlds and were pulling for you in spirit to achieve it. Like myself and all others who have trained well for a marathon and finished below expectations is disappointing and disheartening. But as runners that have the HUGE desire to return to the marathon or other distance race, I am sure that you (and Adam) will be back and come back stronger than ever for the next big events. Best wishes to you and Adam on starting a family and having a "little Goucher" or "little Gouchers" :- )
