Currently in his 8th year as the distance coach at the University of Arizona, James Li came to Tucson from Washington State. In this interview Li talks about working with Lagat and why he has been successful for so long. Li also discusses Lagat's future racing plans.
It was at WSU that Li coached Bernard Lagat during his collegiate career. Li continues to coach Lagat as he progresses through one of the best careers in the history of distance running. Lagat has seven Olympic/WC medals, and Li has been there every step of the way. Lagat will run this weekend at the Boston Indoor Games where he will see current indoor American 5k record holder Galen Rupp. Watch for that 13:18 to drop a little more this Saturday...

As a former athlete under Coach Li, I'd like to weigh in on my own experience at Arizona. |

Runner, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. You clearly don't know abdi and have probably never even talked with him. Coach Li is a good coach, his problem lies in his recruiting skills. Ask any runner at U of A about Coach Li and they will tell you that he truly can coach. There is a reason why they go there. If you look at the talent that Arizona brings in, it is mainly mid-level athletes (with the exception of Ige and Hassan). But if you look at how the athletes have improved since high school, you will see a significant change for the better. It is easy for someone to coach guys who are already national caliber out of high school like puskedra or chris derrick, but James Li hasn't had this type of talent to work with. There may be a lot of rumors going around but I sest you check your facts before believing what you hear. Yeah, Arizona has had a rough time the past 3 years, but the team is steadily getting better. I guarantee they will be back on the national scene within the next few years. Coach Li is a class act and a true talent in the coaching world... |

You people who disagree obviously dont know , well you may but you know for a fact that this coach is not worth having....I am sorry but I have a hard time taking someone seriously who cannot even formulate a sentence in correct english, and who also drops names without dropping their own. U of A had some rough circumstances during XC, Abdi contracted the swine flu, one top five runner missed the first half of the season, and two top five runners were not at full strength for pac-10s. Coach Li doesnt take responsibility, he just guides his runners and gives them responsibilty. His runners really mature as responsible adults over there four years with him, even though they may not make the huge strides that others runner do because Coach Li realizes the importance of quality of running over hammering to injury. |

I have been waiting for three years for an interview with this guy. I'm a little dissapointed that there was not more on what he does training wise. But maybe that is down the road. All you guys hatin' about his college job need to get off his back. Just this weekend he got redshirt soph Abdi Hassan under 4 in the mile. I think he is doing fine. |

Look man... i live in Tucson, Az and i know alot about the UofA and the different coaches... i see what most of u dont... i personally do not believe Coach Li is a good coach... recruting isnt everything... ive talked to ex uofa atheltes who would agree with me that coach li doesnt know how to coach.. Lagat is a great runner... i love that man... wen u see him in the streets he is super humble... but coach li isnt a good coach... he has good athletes... he just doesnt know to train them very well... i wont go into too much detail cuz i already know im not going to change most of ur guys' minds... but believe me.. i live in tucson... i know many things that Coach Li does... and the rest of u probably dont know |

Ya I have to agree that you sound really stupid if you say he is a bad coach. You can't discount what Lagat has done and not give any credit to the coach, especially when he has been coaching him for 13 years. Li has also coached some other talented runners as well, as a previous poster mentioned. As for not having a team qualify for nationals the past 6yrs, that could be due to various reasons. First, it isn't an easy task to qualify for ncaa's. Also, Li may be an excellent coach that just isn't the best at recruiting (I have no idea because I really don't know much about him or the Arizona program but I'm just saying this could be the case). So I would really hesitate to say that he is a bad coach. Not all good coaches are going to go into detail about how they coach their athletes in an interview (that would be essentially giving away their product for free). |

all i have to say is this coach should at least be credited with one very important thing. He has coached Lagat for the last 13 or so years since he came to America. That being said, the longevity of Lagat's career and how well he continues to run is amazing. A bad coach would have burnt this guy out or got him injured way too much. Coach Li should at least be credited with that aspect of Lagat's long and successful career. |

with all due respect, runner, you are an idiot. look back at the pac 10 and west regional results from 2005 and 2006 and understand that your point: |

Yeah because because he hasn't had good runners before... Cheserat, Abdi Hassan now. Part of it is recruiting, if he can't get the guys with the motivation to train right, then it doesn't matter what he has them do. |

This guy is a terrible coach. Bernard Lagat is amazing, and anyone could coach Lagat. Coach Lee hasn't proven anything with his cross-country/ track program at the University of Arizona. |

seriously, the guy is a terrible interviewee and should really know what he is talking about, besides saying bernard is a legend and there isn't much more to say. he really needs to forget about his title as "bernard lagat's coach" and coach a bit better. perhaps producing a good cross country program at university of arizona would be a good thing too you know. |
