This season Flotrack scheduled to bring you a Ryan Hall WOW leading into the Chicago Marathon. Obviously the news came about with Ryan withdrawing from the race this weekend, however, Flotrack's Kevin Selby had already made the trip to Mammouth so we decided to still deliver what we had scheduled for the community. We wish Ryan all the best as he prepares for his next race and know we'll be seeing him rolling again soon!
The Mammoth Track Club is one of the premiere traning groups in the US. Based at 7500 feet in Mammoth Lakes, CA, the Mammoth TC features athletes specializing in all events from 800 meters to the marathon. In August we had the chance to visit the Mammoth TC as they did a workout at one of their regular meeting locations, Shady Rest Park.
Several workouts were done during this session:
Ryan Hall and Alistar Cragg did 12-16 x 400 with 1:00 rest.
Amy Hastings and Scotty Bauhs did 8 x 600 with 2:00 rest.
Dan Browne, Brian Ball, and Mike Sayenko did 6 x 1000 with 3:00 rest.

Great vid. Spilts are always nice but I agree that it would have been tough to get them on a workout that runs point to point and so many other people running on the road as well. |

WOW!!! so you get the privelage to go out and film/talk to some of the best marathoners in the country and you give us back no splits and horrible camera work. Shouldnt such an important task be left to someone who knows what their doing? and dont give me this hes trying crap, flotrack is one of the only running websites out their and its filming is left in the hands to someone who probably couldnt pass a middle school av classUh-huh. Well, Anon., if we're being snarky, then: You prolly couldn't pass a middle school spelling/grammar class. To wit: 'privelage' = privilege; 'shouldnt' = shouldn't; 'their' = they're; 'dont' = don't...shall I go on? Srsly. Grow up and/or just be nice. Pick one. |

Screw off. He did a great job. If you think it sucks, why don't you go somewhere else? No one is forcing you to watch this. |

Another nice Selby video. It got me fired up to go run, so I just did so around my neighborhood at 11:00 pm:) When watching the video I kept wondering to myself when one of those parked cars was going to back up and nail a few runners! It's a three-ringed circus out there and it will be nice when they get the track built in Mammoth. |

This is the dumbest training I've ever heard. Why would someone ever do quick, high intensity stuff for 5/10k first and then switch over to a base/marathon style of training in the last 12 weeks? It doesn't make sense. Hall drops out of the New York because he's doing base training right up until his marathon, when your legs are going to feel tired and not rested. Can someone please clarify what the point of this training program is? Logic tells me that when training for any type of event, the idea is to get a big base in, and as race time gets closer, reduce volume and increase intensity followed by a taper. Maybe this is why this whole training group doesn't win any medals anymore and just is burned out and slow when it counts.Go to runners world's site. Look under marathon training programs. One of them explains things. Your way of marathon training is not the best or smartest way to train for a marathon. Good luck though. |

Thankfully he's got you to set him straight. |

Great video. Almost reminds me of a college team with all the people around doing workouts. Group training at its best! |

I would assume that the workouts are done on the road as they don't have a track in Mammoth. That would be my guess. |

I couldn't care less about the shaky camera work, Kevin; you could turn the camera upside down and I'd still watch and enjoy this. Thanks; appreciate your efforts. |

Great job, Kevin. Although splits are always great, they don't always tell the whole story. Posture and body language in my mind are equal barometers of effort. |

Dumbest thing you've ever heard? Obviously you've never read anything about Canova/Gigliotti/the Italian school of marathon training. "Base training" does not equal "marathon training." That false equation is about 20 years old. Do your research before you say ignorant things. |

The Deaf Pilots perform both songs in this WOW. My apologies for not reporting splits and the shaky camera. All were running point-to-point, and I was on my bike just trying to stay out of the way as runners came from both directions. |
