agreed...he was no-where with 450 meters to go. when the running started, he should have been with the leaders. stop complaining about other runners!

Anonymous Coward 11 months ago

THE ONLY CORRECT THING HE SAID WAS, 'I CAN ONLY BLAME MYSELF."
YOU HAD EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO PUT YOURSELF IN THE RIGHT POSITION GOING INTO THE FINAL STRAIGHTAWAY.

will leer has every right to say everything he has and i would like to see more of this competitive fire in every athlete. Im sick of this we are all friends and teammates i would like to see more trash talk in the sport it makes the races a lot more interesting. Look nat every other sport espn blows up any comment that an athlete says about another athlete but guess what those games get huge ratings. It would be fun to see solinsky call out galen for his weak a** mask and then have them duke it out. They all have these feelings let them say it. Go Wil)

IF YOU WANT TRASH TALKING, STICK WITH THE SPRINTERS.

If you watch his last lap, Leer was amazing. Over 400 meters no one else had as much speed and power as Leer. He made about 18 moves. Unfortunately for him they were almost all into closed doors. Hurry up and stop. It just wasn't the most skillful racing. I know that's easy to say while watching video form an elevated camera, but no one else in race spun their wheels that much. Of course he's frustrated, he felt all that speed and power and got nothing for it.

I don't see a problem with anything he said. He's a competitive guy who just finished 4th again. He's got every right to be pissed and anyone in his shoes would be. Lagat already said he has zero intention of running the 1500 at world champs so why is he in the race? And 212 is rediculous for these guys. People wanna say thats championship but racing but thats a bunch of crap. No world class championship race goes out in 212. But him taking the pace early would have just ended like Wurth-Thomas dying late. Its a lose, lose situation for all these guys to run like that.)

THERE WERE GUYS IN THAT RACE THAT WERE NEVER GOING TO MAKE THE TEAM REGARDLESS OF HOW THE RACE WAS SET UP.
WHY PICK ON LAGAT?
THEY ALL HAD THE SAME OPPORTUNITY IN THE RACE TO PUT THEMSELVES IN THE RIGHT POSITION.
WITH THE PACE BEING THAT SLOW, ALL OF THE RUNNERS SHOULD HAVE HAD A KICK.

I have to take back my statement from below. After watching Leer's interview after the semi, he changed his stance quite a bit. Back then he was just following Kip, one of the savviest runners ever! The slow pace seemed to be his best friend and it was "just racing". End this post final interview he is being quite the DOUCHE. I understand loosing and not being happy but how do you go from praising Kip and his tactics to blaming him for your failure while using the same tactics?

take it like a man

CHAMPS TIME 11 months ago

I think that Will has the right to be frustrated and isn't necesarilly being a douche, just douchey at this moment. I am sure that he didnt want such a slow pace but didnt do anything to change it. No pace setters at majors and I think it spoils us a bit. Would Leer be speaking out about Lagats race tactics if the scoreboard showed he got 4th and received the gift from Lagat? Obviously he is frustrated and after a race like this deservedly so. I am sure that he wanted the team badly and maybe this experience will help him in the future. I'm sure that at worlds or olympics, when he gets there, he will experience some crazy tactics being applied by teams for the benefit of their top runners and directly to disadvantage others. Tactics are part of the race and through all the fog here it seems that he was really angry that he didnt move up and take charge of the pace. We watched Wurth take a huge risk! Every event has that person that should have made the team but didn't. This is a great example of how it sucks to be that guy. I feel for him

I like it! He's honest!

Guy puts in thousands and thousands of miles and speaks his mind. Regardless, of what he said is true or not, is not the point. The fact is, our sport we have way too much of a tendency to be "Politically correct" and say the write thing.
Keep up the work, Leer! I like the attitude! Show's how much you care about your running! We need more runners like you!

Anonymous Coward 11 months ago

cut him some slack you . i think it's pretty easy to understand his frustration, and i also think it's nice to see someone actually say what they mean in an interview rather than just blabbering meaningless cliches to give the illusion of being "a nice guy." look just a tiny little bit past the surface of this interview and i think it's pretty obvious that Will Leer is a decent chap.

I am sure he is gonna wish he could take this interview back.

Hey Will, watch Bernard's interview if you want to see what it is like to have class

Talk about ingratitude! Leer only made the final b/c Lagat slowed down the pace in his heat. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, right?

Mike 11 months ago

I just rewatched the race and finish. It was very slow, and Leer had a the best finish but he was trapped behind slower sprinters. I really think he got fourth and third was his with another meter. Wheating fell over the line but was clearly behind Leer a quarter of a second before the finish.

CForeman 11 months ago

As I commented on the video, Lagat did nothing differently than any other person in that race. He only went to the front twice, once in the 2nd lap and another time when he was kicking down the home-stretch. At least he was in position to make something happen at the end! You cannot complain about somebody else screwing up the race when you're in the very back doing nothing. Will screwed himself and has every reason to be pissed off, but he needs to not point the finger at other runners, but take responsibility for his mistakes. He should have put himself in the mix, and he would be going to Daegu. Side Note: Will had to have run 420 meters in this race, he was all over the place! More poor tactics.

Rob 11 months ago

That interview really makes Leer look like a passive aggressive whining brat. I was pulling for him up the final straight, but if I knew he was really like this (instead like the personna he portrays in his witty blog), I would have just watched the other guys beat him. Grow up, Will.

jossie 11 months ago

if he thought the pace was slow why didnt he took it out them.he needs to stop crying and start to run faster!!!

justart5 11 months ago

He doesn't look like a baby, he still at the end blames no one but himself. He makes some good points about the wind and the pace. Hopefully they go to the tape and he does edge out the "unbeatable" Wheating, who with that ridiculous (not to mention reckless, he's lucky no one behind him stepped on him and hurt him or themselves) dive looked very beatable today.

right about one thing.. 11 months ago

he did have the fastest last lap... he was the only one to break 52 as 9 guys were sub 53 last lap. he had a bad break at the end tactics wise, but if he gets A standard he'll be in there. I see it being pretty difficult for a guy like centro to go to europe he's first time and get the A... esp after having such a long college season. I def see Wheating getting the A if his time from last yr doesn't stand. whoever can get into monaco will be racing daegu.

Ill 11 months ago

He's the man, completely has the right to be frustrated.

will leer is the man 11 months ago

will leer you let em know i was cheerin for you that whole race too, first lagat shafts russel brown from getting to the final and then he pulls that in the finals.

Junkie XC 11 months ago

If he felt that way he should have pushed it. He just comes off looking like a spoiled little jerk...

Come on 11 months ago

Don't be a baby. If you wanted a faster lead, you had every chance in the world to take it out yourself. Don't blame Lagat for a slow pace.

Anonymous Coward 11 months ago

my DVR says Wheating by a chest hair

Don't be a baby Will, PLEASE don't say that anyone ELSE should have taken the lead. Please...
