I think in order to find a long term solution; track and field needs to be built upon a solid foundation. This foundation will come from getting children actively involved with running and competing at a young age. I started running track in 7th grade because a friend said I should join the team. But, I had no clue we also had a cross country team. Hell, I didn’t even know what CC was until sophomore year of HS. Baseball, football, and soccer are huge because we are taught as children to love the sport. People tell us these sports are important and we buy into them. The same must be done with running. So bring running back to its’ purest form. Running is about having fun and competing. I think we try to focus on the competition part too early. Let the kids enjoy themselves and the willingness to compete will come. Promote youth track and fun runs within the community. I’m not saying the other ideas are not good. Agreed there must be things done in the here and now, but we also must look to the future of the sport and try to ensure its’ longevity.

Flotrack is starting to get the ball rolling with thoughts and ideas about issues in the sport and where it needs to be improved...lets get to the core of the sport and make it better! You may not find all the answers here, but we need to get people thinking and thinking outside the box. Listen in and give your feedback. We need to work together to get this sport moving in the right direction because at the end of the day.....do you really know what it means when people say "its good for the sport"?
Personalities - We root for Derrick Rose here in Chicago because he's a humble, hometown kid. People either love or hate the Yankees because of the style and personality of the team. Frame of Reference - I never played competetive football. I don't really like watching football. Likewise, when someone runs a 5k under 13 minutes, most people don't know what that means. When I tell them their pace per mile in order to run that, that's when I usually see the dropped jaws. I think the coverage needs to include a relevant frame of reference for those who aren't as familiar while being careful not to dumb the whole sport down. Consistency of Coverage of an Athlete or Team - Again, I love Derrick Rose. I have been able to easily keep up with his stats this year, as well as find out when and where he's playing with no difficulty at all. It's fun comparing his stats along with his style of play to other NBA elites. I'm also a big fan of Will Leer (random example). I don't know where he's running next or what times he has already run. Rooting for an athlete or team and comparing them to other teams makes sports fun. Having all of the relevant information about an athlete in one easy-to-find location would be huge for track fans, and it would very possibly allow those with mild interest to be more engaged in what's going on. Commentary - It's getting slightly better, but we still have a long way to go. Jerseys - Maybe make it easier to get a fan uniform top. Maybe even throw some names on them. I don't know, just thinking out loud. Seems to work for other sports.
Too Long....I think a start would be to have meets in smaller time frames. As a coach and former athlete a good track meet is my favorite thing to watch. As a husband, father, teacher, coach, etc I need to get home to be those other things at some point. It is tough to mesh offering the sport to all the new kids, yet highlight the next generation of stars. We have all been to a 12 hr Saturday marathon. It sucks the life out of all until Tuesday. Even a great 4x400m relay and the fittest spectators in the world can't keep their attention that long. Time to try other things. Distance classics. Sprints Only Meets. Throwers only meets etc. Rotate HS meets and do half the events one week, half the next. I get the whole performance aspect of long meets. However, we have the #2 most popular sport in HS . However, is anyone watching? Penn Relays is entertaining because they keep it moving! We all must do the same.
