Great race
World record requires a loop course? Does this make sense or is there reason to revisit? Let's take a moment to review the history of the race and the great venues around the world. Was the original marathon a loop? No!. Are the many of the world's most notable races point to point? Yes (i.e., Athens [original Marathon), London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, London, Los Angeles, Toronto, Mt. Olympus, Great Wall, Two Oceans, etc.) and many more have a start and finish within a mile of each other making them a virtual loop. Would it not be better to merely have criteria about the "wind speed" and the overall elevation? |

No WR but still great!

The course is not point to point. Meaning that the start and finish are not at the same place. Because of this, it is not an official WR. Elite athletes choose to run Boston for a number of reasons. The fame of winning the Boston Marathon, the media attention, and the money is great. World Record or not, it is a Boston course record, and many great runners have run this marathon over the years. |
