Lukas Verzbicas broke 4 minutes in the mile in a high school only race which has not been done since the 1960s. Austin Mudd of Indiana had a great kick to finish second in 4:01.

Lukas is developing a serious kick. Could his basic speed be under rated?

Taylor Bell 2 years ago

That's the only time I've seen him in legitimate pain. Ha.

With all due respect. it's amazing - LAST place: 4:11.68 And this ain't meters, this is yards. What a great group of runners.

Lukas's tribute to his competition speaks volumes.
Track athletes = great people.

pahahahaha! 2 years ago

This is honestly hilarious!!! They're making fun of like everybody... even Alan Webb!

Mudd closed in 55. By all accounts he's probably a better miler than Verzbicas (not that it really matters).

Somebody needed to inform the pacemaker that stepping off to the INSIDE is not against the rules

Anyone have Mudd's last 200? He was in no better than 5th place with 200 to go and finishes 2nd.

James Polasek 2 years ago

I like How the lady said he set the American record for the two mile

Tommie Poston 2 years ago

I'm really curious about Mudd's last 200 split. Almost positive it was under 27 seconds.

Awesome race! I wish high school milers could break the 4-minute barrier more often. Such a prestigious accomplishment. I dreamed of running that kind of time when I was in high school. I can tell LV is humble and very appreciative of his accomplishment. Good job!

(Re: topper 7 hours ago I was asking a legitimate question, wasn't trying to be an ass. I'm just saying everyone whines about Cheserek not being american but he's just as american as Lukas. Nothing wrong with that, not trying to start a debate. I was just asking if lukas has become an official citizen or not (which would be awesome to have him run for the states!). So settle down there.)

Wasn't getting on your case. People have been cutting Lukas up since he set the HS 2 mile record questioning his US citizenship. Was just throwing that out there for the "BEING BORN IN AMERICA" ignorant comments.
It's funny that I haven't heard anything on Bernard Lagat not being born in the US, who also happens to own the American records in the indoor 2 mile, outdoor 3k and also the outdoor 5k.
Lopez Lomong wasn't born here. He represented the US at the 2008 Olympics in the 1500. And Sam Chelenga, who wasn't born here, has applied for US citizenship.
I know both Lagat and Lomong are US citizens now.
It's just that every othere comment about Lukas was him not being born here. I always thought that America was home of the free, land of the brave. I guess for some, that only matters unless you you set a HS National record.
Can't wait for him at Oregon!

Lukas is not an american citizen. Him and Cheserek are in the same boat. American by his name was a typo.

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

I'm pretty sure Lukas has dual-citizenship, but don't quote me on that.

Lukas didn't lead from start to finish. And he also wasn't sporting a USA flag tattoo on his arm. Does that mean the time doesn't count?

Congrats!! 2 years ago

This is awesome, so happy I was able to see it and not just 30seconds on nbc.
Congrats to lukas and everyone else who PR'd as well, crazy fast.
Does this mean lukas is an american citizen now? noticed that his name said USA and CHeserek said kenya

I think i could celebrate his victory in my heart a bit more if I knew that Fernandez was going to do better in the future! One star rises....... as another one falls!

Terrible pacemaker... there would have been two-three other guys sub 4.00 with better pacemaker.

Balls Dog 2 years ago

Are you kidding me? That pacing was awful! Nice job getting off the track, dude.

NYAC 2 years ago

Good run by Lukas. Unfortunately the Girls' Dream Mile was a joke. The top two milers in the country were busy running the NY state meet, which had 5 girls under 4:25 in the 1500m. (1) Mary Cain (Frosh) - 4:17, (2) Aisling Cuffe (Sr) - 4:19.

Lukas is amazing, he continues do whatever is required of him from his sponsers, coaches, and fans!.....but most importantly himself!...the guy has Vision!!!!

DJ Rabion is a moran!....or he just likes raining on someone elses parade!...get a life!...do you realize how many have stated the same stuff before?..you moran!

Chris Brennan 2 years ago

i was there to watch this!!! i like the part where the announcer says that with this weather sub 4 is out the window and then LV takes the lead and ends up breaking 4 anyway! it was sooo chilly rainy and windy for any of you that did not have the pleasure of being there :)

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

That was one hell of a close, awesome race. I hope this silences the haters, because Lukas is and will be amazing

Who's next.... 2 years ago

Lukas did a trlathlon the day before...so what are you getting at?

Muddy Waters 2 years ago

Given that Mudd was mistaken for Oshier at the end, he wasn't mentioned even once during the race. Way to sneak in under the radar and excellent effort!

JimDillner 2 years ago

Not only has it not been done in a high school meet since the 60's, it was only done once before in a high school meet, and that was done by Jim Ryun.
