Ryan Bak had been "retired" from the professional running scene until he popped a 2:14 debut marathon last month. Bak's recent success has come as a bit of a surprise given the fact he is no longer in an elite training group as a full time runner. In the past Bak had trained with OTC in Eugene where a huge focus was the Olympic Trials, a make or break event in terms of your career. Currently Ryan lives in Bend, OR where he trains with Max King, but also works full time for yurbuds. Bak talks about the change in environments and how its effected his running.

Good luck Ryan!

Ryan - It doesn't matter what I or anyone else thinks....I was just curious, thanks for clarifying. In the long run (so to speak), maybe leaving OTC and taking the full time job is the best thing you could have done for your carreer. Good luck!

Best of luck to you, Ryan. I hope you have a great race at the Trials. And may some sponsorship come your way!

Annoyed runner, go eat your lemons somewhere else... Results are results, no matter what, when or where you train...

I just want to clarify a few points...I definitely do not have a "whatever attitude toward the trials." I am going to the trials to compete for a spot on the Olympic team. I am very focused in what I am doing and I am working very hard to achieve my goals. I would not race the trials if my training didn't indicate that I can run significantly faster than I already have. I'm going to Houston to run the best possible race that I can on January 14. My recent training indicates that a solid race will put me in position to be a dark horse to have an outside shot to make the team. Just because I don't have time to do all of the "little things," doesn't mean that I'm not going out to Houston to run fast and beat as many people as I can that run full time and do all the things that I currently don't have time for with a full time job. I am currently seeking sponsorship to enable me to give more of my daily time towards running so that I can truly reach my potential in the marathon.

Thank you to everyone that has shown support and is rooting for me to succeed. It truly means a lot to me and I very much appreciate it.

annoyed runner is an idiot 1 year ago

Hey "annoyed runner," why not? Getting to the Trials is a matter of one thing: running a qualifier time obtained on a legit course without cheating. Bak did it. He can have whatever attitude he wants- if you don't like it, feel free to qualify for the Trials, whup him by a few minutes, and come on flotrack to say "I don't have a whatever attitude abou training."

you should not be at the trials and have a whatever attitude towards training.

He isn't saying if you want to be a great runner go work full time and run. He has a different perspective. He even said he "enjoys" running more now. It's all about enjoying the sport! Rooting for him at the trials!

I dont do the little things? what a moron. No wonder he only ran 2:14 on a net downhill course.

I couldn't agree more with this guy. Its a complete change of perspective when you're no longer solely focussed on training. You have time to "settle" your training down and ease into things and allow miles to just build up without really thinking about MPW or pace. Then after a few months of that you go "Oh crap, I'm running just as much now as I was during my "competitive" days... and I'm still healthy."

Interesting. Working for yurbuds? What's he do for them? I sort of understand the "no pressure" idea, but isn't that something you can solve while remaining a pro athlete? Perhaps running for OTC just wasn't good for Ryan and he needed to train somewhere else. Perhaps he should've been running the marathon all along. I just don't see how working full time can help a marathon runner reach his full potential.....

Would love to see a guy like this just pop one and surprise everyone at the trials.
