Dathan Ritzenhein finishes 4th at the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston. Dathan was with the main pack for much of the race and over the last 6 miles started fading. He made a charge towards the ending, just finishing third place by 8 seconds. For Dathan, his time of 2:09:55 was a five second person best.

I think he said "immediate disappointment", not "media ..."

Ritz, I doubt you read this - don't feel any media disappointment. Everybody is right with you cheering for you. That was one heck of a race. Some days it just doesn't come together. Don't let 8 seconds tell you that you can't be a marathoner. That's way faster than most people can do on any stage. Things will look up man.

AMERICAN'S ONLY! 4 months ago

(((Always a Champion!!!!!! 1 day ago Some things to consider..........
Any other US Marathon Trials, any other year in the past, you would have either won or come in second! - And Only once!
I love both Meb and Abdi and respect what they've accomplished but that fact remains that they are both Foriegn Born Nationals and would probably not make the Olympic Marathon Teams in the country of their birth this year!
You are way, way, way far from finished yet! The 5k & 10k awaits! You can still do it! Come on, give yourself a break here, did any of those guys ahead of you have surgery on their leg six months ago???? You just ran a 2:09 that's incredibly fast)))

WAS WAITING FOR THE ONE IGNORANT COMMENT. YOU MISSY, ARE THE WINNER. I WONDER WHERE HALL'S GREAT GREAT GRAND PARENTS CAME FROM?

distance fan 4 months ago

Marathon's require more strength than speed, where track is all about speed. Ritz still has the speed for track, marathon strength will come down the road. Probably the same reason Rupp held off on running the marathon this year..

Face it Ritz, you're still too fast for the marathon.

wow! 4 months ago

seriously?
If you would have ran 8 seconds faster you would have qualified, and you wouldn't be saying anything about going back to shorter distances.
8 seconds in the marathon is like a photo finish in the 800,which means your just as good!

Ritz I was cheering for you the whole way! You are really inspiring and have gone through an unbelievable amount of stuff to get where you are today. Best of luck with whatever you choose to do next!

Zurich 8/28/09
Ritz's greatest ever performance was on the track. I would love to see him get all his focus back to the oval.

Wrong TJ! 4 months ago

No, he should not have stayed with Hudson! Salazar is a rock and has been there for him every step of the way. He knows clearly now what he needs to do to maximize his potential in the sport. There simply wasn't enough quality time for him to build a solid base after the surgery. If the Trails had been held in Febuary, he would have easily run a minute and half faster!

Good Luck Ritz this time will pass. Everyone must watch for this man because HE IS NOT DONE! Ritz is the former US 5k record holder and he is not done with the track. This is a blessing because he has two amazing teammates to train with, Rupp and Farah. there is not doubt that he will do great work in the 10k

Alan Castilleja 4 months ago

NOOOOOOOOOOO! I was cheering for you during the race around mile 5 and mile 11 and 22 and you are one of my inspirations! Dont give it up yet Ritz. One day at a time.

TJ 4 months ago

Should've stayed with Hudson. The other PRs he ran were run off of Hudson's base.

Big Fan! 4 months ago

I DVR'd the race... came home to watch it despite knowing the results earlier in the day. Rooted for you for that 3rd spot all the way. Felt for you at the end, dude. You're a BEAST at the 5k and 10k. You'll be back! I believe it!

I was at mile 23 and Dathan looked good. I thought he might catch Abdi.

He'd be really DISAPPOINTED with your spelling

Tough day for Ritz, finishing 9 seconds back and he still netted a PR after 3 months of training. Stay healthy Dathan, take as much time off as you need and get in another 5 months of healthy training. Big things will come in the 5/10.

whelp 4 months ago

he is so fragile in every way. perhaps something shorter will be best, but he really needs to nut up. too talented in the legs, but not enough MEAT and MENTAL FORTITUDE, along with a lack of antibodies.

Disgusted with some fans 4 months ago

I hate how people always assume that foreign-born Africans that have become US distance runners are from either Ethiopia or Kenya. Abdi is from Somalia and Meb is Eritrean. Barring intervention from a masked gunman there is no chance they wouldn't make their birth countries team. They are American now, that's what matters. The USA is sending their 3 best marathoners to London this year to try to get a medal.

Black Cactus 4 months ago

Both Meb and Abdi came here as children and were forced out of there homes by terrible wars. They would also easily make the teams of the countries they were born in. Eritrea and Somalia do not have anyone as good as them. Considering what they have lived through they deserve to be on the team more than anyone else. I would like to see how successful you would be if you were forced to flee your home and become a refugee as a child. Black Cactus Nation for life.

Good news for track fans. I think a lot of people were secretly hoping Ritz would turn back to the track

Patrick Kelly 4 months ago

Ritz had to overcome a lot with that Achilles injury, shouldn't be so down on this performance. I hope he gets an opportunity with the 5 or 10k

Moorezy 4 months ago

Still my favorite runner! I totally agree with @always a champion!!, I cant wait to see him hungry for the 5-10k!

I still love you Ritz! Go get you, Mo, and Rupp in that 10k! Salazar sweep!

This is where good marathoners in the US benefit come Olympic time. You've still got a chance at the 10k, and coming off a marathon PR, you'll be in good shape. Go break 27.

Richard Adickes 4 months ago

Ritz is my favorite runner by far. Keep your head up man you inspire a lot of people including me.

Hope you see this .. "Things can be far worse".

David Russell 4 months ago

I wanted him to him to make it and feel bad for him. But I think he's a better track athlete and am glad to see him back at the Olympics in the 10K.
