St. Benedict's Edward Cheserek took aim at the oldest record in the book Gerry Lindgren's famed 8:40.0 two-mile at the Molloy Stanner Games at The Armory.

Hammering through the final mile by himself in 4:16, Cheserek missed by three seconds, finishing in 8:43.16. Lindgren who ran for Rogers High in Spokane, Wash. has held the national indoor mark for nearly 48 years.

I heard that he was born in Texas, but lived in Kenya for one year when he was about 15... Anyways, he is a legit athlete who has a serious chance of making the US Olympic team this june

Respect The Work that the kid 4 months ago

The fact that he was born in another country doesn't make him faster. It doesn't mean that he doesn't have to train as hard so who cares where he was born. He lives in America, he goes to American schools, he deserves the same rights as any other high school athlete.

Americans Only!!! 4 months ago

You bigots must than hate: Bernard Laget, Lopez Lomong, Diego Estrada. And soon to be, Sam Chelenga.
Didn't realize that so many INDIANS enjoyed FLOTRACK.

Fed up! 4 months ago

That's it, I'm really fed up with this! Tomorrow I'm moving to Kenya for my senior year so that I can break all of their High School swimming records!

Great job Edward! Keep up the hard work. You never cease to amaze me.

@You don't deserve it.
Jingoism would be more appropriately used to describe the US telling Iran they can't pursue nuclear technology or we will sanction them. It doesn't necessarily apply to some random dude on a track website who thinks foreign born runners shouldn't be able to break American track records.
However, records were meant to be broken. I don't think we should hold them as being sacred and put restrictions on who is allowed to break them under what conditions. Either there was a kid who ran a certain time or there wasn't. We shouldn't have to include the qualifier that yeah there was a guy who ran that fast, but he doesn't count as a person because I'm stubborn.

You don't deserve it. 4 months ago

That's not nationalism. That's called jingoism, and its actually a bad thing. Running has nothing to do with who you are or where you come from. That's why we do it and love it. Clearly you've never been a true competitor.

Does he deserve it? 4 months ago

Sorry if I'm a "Nationalistic Bigot" but why should this guy get credit for taking this record down? ANOTHER FORIEGN BORN NATIONAL enters into the record books? Soon every record from High School, to College, to the Masters will be held by these FBN guys! I hope he gets it actually but his age and status should be listed as "FBN" for all to see and know!
