This past Saturday Galen Rupp broke Bernard Lagat's American indoor 2 mile record by .35 running 8:09.72 with splits of 4:07-4:02. Across the country Lagat took down Rupp's American indoor 5k record by about six seconds running 13:05. We made the trek to Albuquerque where Rupp is currently doing altitude training with his Oregon Elite group including Mo Farah and Ciaran O'Lionaird through the USA Indoor Championships. Galen talks about his race, sinus infection, Geoff Hollister and going head to head with Bernard Lagat at the end of the month.

And if you're wondering, Galen is doing an easy 4 mile run on the treadmill at about 6:10 pace.

@harry I don't understand how taking public speaking* classes will help him to become a better athlete...I think he's already a world class athlete though.

He said you know about 20 times. PLEASE if you want to be a world class athlete take a public speking class!!!!

Talking without panting at 6:10 pace on a treadmill at altitude. Impressive.

It's really fun as a distance running fan, particularly one with a bias to cheer Americans, to watch Galen Rupp perform the way he has. He's a huge talent with an apparently good sense about him—patient, competitive, humble.

Love this quote about Lagat: "He's fast... he can run fast." Um, yea. Both y'all freakshows can run fast, real fast.

@imarunr: you funny

this interview is 7 minutes. galen couldnt give you guys 10 minutes to talk while he is not on a treadmill? sad.
i asked galen if i could interview him on the treadmill. tried to do something a little different, plus as runners we are most relaxed in conversation when we're running....like when we all talk to our friends on long runs.

and to answer a question below, this run is in the gym at the condo complex they are staying at in ABQ

@How Do You Know: EXACTLY. We have no idea how fast he is running during that interview or for how long. @Ryan from FloTrack: Can you speak to how fast and for how long GR was running here? And where was this, some hotel workout room?

How Do You Know 3 months ago

Yeah 3 months ago

"Alberto! Flotrack is here. They want to talk to Galen."

"Fine, just tell them to not to interrupt his training"

You guys are such complainers I thought this was a great interview. He's not breathing hard what so ever and you can hear all the questions and answers perfectly clear. Stop crying about it.

I've got to be honest, I do not enjoy interviews while running on a treadmill. Flotrack, you kick butt, but this is more distracting than enjoyable and I really did want to hear this interview.

16-17hrs of sleep! How much does he average on a typical day?

One of America's greatest runners and yet so young! Still has a ton of running ahead of him. Seems like the guy is always dealing with some kind of upper respiratory problem though. Nice guy, unpretentious and humble as can be.

I feel like a slug, lol 3 months ago

my treadmill only goes as fast as he's running and he's not even breathing.....

Alex. imagine being able to run a 4:02 after a 4:07 indoors. Or a 1:52 last 800m in a 10k when in college. who cares about 6:10 pace.

Barely sounds out of breath, anyway it was another amazing run by Galen Rupp things seem to be falling into place. He still has so much time to work on his speed can't wait to see what happens this summer!

Alex 3 months ago

Great Run by GR!

Is anyone else surprised by how much he bounces when he runs? I guess it's because he's not as efficient at recovery pace. Imagine 6:10 being recovery pace... imagine 6:10 being over a minute about your marathon pace... bad ass

Runner 3 months ago

A Fat person is more out of breath talking while sitting down than Rupp is running on a treadmill.

Antibiotics can destroy “good” bacteria causing disease!

Is altitude training hard and what type of running camp should I go too this summer for?

zatopek 3 months ago

Once I got used to the sound of the treadmill,
I enjoyed the interview. Good questions and interesting answers. Good job.
