USATF Communication Chief Jill Geer announces details on women's 100 tie at 2012 US Olympic Trials

See photo of Finish and give your opinion here

Explanation from USATF:

"Women’s 100m update – Dead heat for third place

Saturday night’s final of the women’s 100 meters at the 2012 Olympic Trials involved a photo-finish image to determine third place. Timers use two camera positions for photo finishes: one on the outside of the track and one on the inside.

The outside camera is traditionally the one used in photo-finish images. In the women’s 100, the outside camera was inconclusive for determining third place due to athletes’ arms blocking a clear view of their torsos. Torso position is used to determine finishes and times.

Looking at the inside camera images, timers initially looked at the twisting upper bodies of Jeneba Tarmoh and Allyson Felix and interpolated the obscured body positions from the photo finish image. They posted Tarmoh as finishing third in unofficial results on the Hayward Field scoreboard.

Timers then immediately called referees to notify them of a potential dead heat. The photo-finish image, shot at 3,000-frames-per-second, was then analyzed by timers and referees and unanimously ruled to be a dead heat based on visual evidence. Tarmoh and Felix are both officially timed in 11.068 seconds. An image of the photo is attached.

USATF officials are meeting to determine the procedures necessary to break the third-place tie."

Reaction times should have nothing to do with determining who represents the country. See if Felix makes the team in the 200 if she does and Tarmoh does not. Then make a decision based on that. All in all the country wins as a whole. We get a great four by no matter how it works out. If they work together and don't drop the stick that is. Otherwise the finish officials and timers have to do their job and pick a winner. But by no means should reaction times have a thing to do with it. That process was not instated for purposes of picking placing in any way shape or form. The times and judges have to make a call tough as it may be.

Arm Wrastle for it... 11 months ago

Get on "Over the Top" style ala Sylvester Stallone to settle this.

Bob Kersee should get coach of the trials because his folks are bringing the drama and effort that says "No such thing as luck!!! It's when training meets OPPORTUNITY!!!!

I personally feel like USATF just wants Felix to advance. From what I have seen in the image, Tarmoh's torso is clearly ahead of Felix's. I love Felix as a runner, but fair is fair.

Head to head grudge match!

I disagree 11 months ago

I disagree. Reaction time should have nothing to do with the race, other than an indicator to catch a false start. IT is not an indicator of whom is fastest. The race is about who covers the 100m distance the fastest from when they leave the blocks to the finish line. Becasue someone has a better reaction time or not has nothing to do with the foot race they are competing in (again, other than to indicate a false start). speed = distance/time. Fastest = the runner who covers the 100m distance in the least amount of time.

That's what I was thinking. And yes, reaction times are as important as the race itself. Just because she technically covered the distance faster doesn't alone qualify her for the team; she had a slower reaction time, and that's not appealing to a committee deciding on weather or not to send her to London.

Anonymous Coward 11 months ago

That's no easy solution to go off reaction time. The 100 meters is a sprint and reaction to the gun is a key part of winning races. Tarmoh can't have that taken away from her because her reaction time is better. Try again. A run off is an option but being that they are training partners it's would be a big pile of mess. Maybe the next fastest legal seasonal best time??? Either way the Olympic committee should have had a rule in place already. Too bad we can't just go to the 10'000th place I'm sure it's like 11.0675 and 11.0678 or something.

Easy Solution 11 months ago

Go off their reaction times to break the tie. Felix is listed at .188 seconds and Tarmoh is listed at .164 seconds. If they both have the exact same finish time, then this means that Felix covered the 100m distance faster.

11.068 - .188 = 10.88 => Winner Felix
11.068 - .164 = 10.904
The math doesn't lie, and is not subjective.

The athletes should have been involved before they were brought out for interviews. From what I've heard, aren't these girls training partners? This is crazy!

Drama Overload 11 months ago

So much drama! Love it! People falling, downpours, people fighting to get a spot, World Records, photo finishes! THIS IS GREAT! Who says track n field isn't exciting!?

Anonymous Coward 11 months ago

I wouldn't be surprised if they'd first try to dig into the system and pull an additional decimal place. If it's possible, I say that's the most ethical way of going about this.

Og 11 months ago

No the athletes should not be involved in the process with Felix being the bigger name one may influence the official decision so making it strictly professional isolated decision.

Felix protested so I think she knows :)

shouldn't the athletes have been the first to know? involve them in the process!
