Lauren Fleshman of the Oregon Track Club overcame difficult odds due to injury to advance to the Olympic Trials 5k finals. Running only 11 miles per week, Fleshman gutted out the semi-final as she took a step closer to an improbable Olympic berth.

Lauren, you are one of the most inspirational and courageous runners I have ever followed. Your resolve along with the undeniable eloquence you bring to this sport is cherished by people out there. Don't stop sharing it with us!

This fifteen-time All-American knows how to stay above water. I think she has a good chance. Stamina may be the biggest issue. I hope it's raining. That will help a lot!

This is bravery personified! And one of the best interviews I've ever seen in my 54 years of following track.

Wow... great interview!
She had only run 2 miles at a clip, before her 5k race.
Unreal!

Lauren is the true champ of these Olympic Trials. She is why I love running and sports. Guts and the right attitude make LaUREN A CHAMP.

One of the best Flotrack interviews ever.

every runner no matter age or skill level should watch this interview--been on flotrack a long time--agree Loren best interview ever

Babbling Idiot 11 months ago

I have come to the conclusion that all runners should have their IT bands surgically removed. They cause so many of us (runners) to many problems.

This is amazing. I saw her race in Portland and thought to myself, this woman is amazing for being out here. This is the best interview I've ever seen on Flotrack. Go Lauren, the piece about failure is too poignant.

Lauren, I hope you read this:

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! Your race and your words in this interview were gifts to anyone lucky enough to take them in.
You are such a beautiful spirit.

@I am The Walrus: What are you talking about? Lauren was the USATF 5000m champ in 2010. She finished 7th in the 5000m at WCs last year (matching the highest finish ever by an American woman in that event). Her 5000m PR is 14:58. The only American who ran faster than her at 5000m in 2011 was Shalane Flanagan. If Lauren hadn't battled debilitating ITBS all year, she'd surely be a favorite to make the team and possibly even have an outside shot of getting a medal in London. Do a little research before you spew your nonsense.

makes me feel like such a wimp when I race after watching this interview.

I don't know if the Olympics were ever likely for Lauren.

Lauren "The Lion" Fleshman. My body feels like poop right now, but after listening to her I'm out the door! Thanks Lauren!

Anonymous Coward 11 months ago

Man I love this girl! I could listen to her for hours! She better go into coaching once she decides not to run competitively anymore.

sleet08 11 months ago

Great interview! I can't even imagine the guts it takes to run that fast on such sparse training.
