Listening to these commentators is an absolute embarrassment, they have no place talking during the race its just absurd. If they want to talk fine but don't put the speakers out on the course leave them at the lines so that runner can actually focus. How discouraging it would be to have to keep hearing them yak on about anybody other than you. I do not dislike the attention that Mary Cain or Sarah Baxter are getting, outstanding athletes, and I wish the absolute best for them. However don't stuff it down the other girls throats especially during the race and build animosity. Allow all these great athletes the opportunity to help support and love each other.

I'm generally not a critical kind of guy, but as I get older I increasingly feel like distance race announcers are out to lunch. TMZ Live (yes, I'm citing TMZ) has a great policy. During their show any announcer can break in for "breaking news." Here, in the final stretch Mary Cain is rapidly gaining ground. That's exciting. But what are the announcers doing? Yaking about whatever. Come on, announcers, there's a race going on. Announce it. Also Bud Greenspan really screwed up TV producers covering distance running. Greenspan said statistics and times don't mean anything. Maybe that's the case for a prepared feature, but not in a race context. Ninety percent of people watching this race are track nuts. Times and numbers are our lifeblood. How about comparing this year's splits to last year's? Sure, it was slow, but why not compare relative splits? How about comparing Sarah Baxter's track times to Mary Cain's. How about borrowing a page from Vin Scully and throwing in personal tidbits about the top performers? Heck, there's more than 17 minutes to help make the viewing experience more pertinent.

Cross Country has become NASCAR........just finished watching this snooze fest, felt sorry for the announcers trying to come up with some interesting story line.....how many times did we hear about the "relaxed faces" and training techniques, and runners having the ability to "displace" other runners.....wish we could have had a little more drama....sorry but countless loops of a muddy oval and shots of a number of girls slogging through the slush interspersed with the winner killing the field is not the stuff of exciting broadcasts.

Andrew Wheating; "There is a lot of mud everywhere" lol. Spot on commentary. Another Wheating gem: "right now we have an undecided winner."
Andrew, better stick to the track.

If Sarah stays healthy, she very could be the best cross country runner of all times. She has a focus that I have not seen in youth before. She works hard, she listens and she is focused, therefore a great start to become the best ever, even past high school.
