Mary Cain Goes for HS Mile Record at New Balance Games
Mary Cain, who ran an unbelievable 9:02.10 for 3000m at the University of Washington Indoor Preview last weekend, will try to break yet another another indoor prep record at the 2013 New Balance Games in New York, New York.
Cain will toe the line against the professionals in the Elite Mile in an attempt to break Debbie Heald’s national high school indoor mile record of 4:38.5 set way back in ’72. This is the oldest standing girls’ high school record in track and field.
However, the professionals won’t go quietly into the New York night. The field will also include former NCAA champion Sarah Bowman, Australian Olympian Genevieve LaCraze, and Saucony’s Nicole Sifuentes.
Cain is the high school record holder at 1500m after her 4:11.01 at the World Junior Championships last year. However, her race at UW converts roughly to 4:33 for the mile via Jack Daniels’ VDOT calculator.

Flotrack, it's a new frontier. And I applaud what you have been doing since your inception. You have given so many of us access to so many great races and interviews in recent years. And as part of a new frontier, you are continuing to carve out new roads. And I applaud that too.
I am a track and field fan (and participant) for 47 years. I would have loved to see Galen and Robby and Mary and Ed et al race today. And would have paid a nominal fee for it! But the word 'subscription' is scary to a lot of people. Especially those of us who do not coach. To me too
So I think you made too sharp of a 'right turn' today. But have the courage and the gumption to continue to strive. We will find a happy medium. If not Flotrack , then who?
Much continued success,
Bill Allert
