Ritzenhein confident heading into Chicago
Only two Americans have run a faster marathon than Dathan Ritzenhein's run at the 2012 Chicago Marathon. His 2:07:47 performance last October was the marathon breakthrough Ritz has looked for since he first attempted the distance in 2006 at New York. The time seems to be right again in 2013. Coming off a solid track season and a string of good health, Ritz may cross the line in Chicago as the fastest American marathoner in history. Sorry for the audio issue. Headphones may be easier to hear. The Tegenkamp interview tomorrow will not have this issue. 0:59 - If everything goes perfect, how fast do you expect to run? Does Ritz have a different approach compared to last year? 2:10 - Finding a balance between being competitive and running a solid time 2:30 - Feeling more prepared than last year 3:20 - Ritz and coach Alberto Salazar felt that 2012 was "another race to finish the season." Is 2013 the same? 4:44 - What's the best marathon workout you've had and has there been a key workout to indicate any sort of time? 6:37 - "You can't just do the same thing all the time. You don't get the same benefit. You also don't learn..." 7:26 - Ritz on closing long workouts really hard 8:00 - Staying at altitude right before the race (and when he came back up to Park City, UT after the World Championships) 9:50 - What does an early fast marathon pace do to Ritz' race plan? Ritz also gives what he wants to split at 13.1 miles. 11:34 - When is Ritz traveling to Michigan and Boulder? More importantly, when are the matchup races going to happen? 12:25 - Ritz not too worried about "fatter" Centro 12:46 - Two-mile matchup at Millrose?

Dathan Ritzenhein wants a slower pace through the half than the Kenyans
The Kenyans want to go out in 61:45. That's faster than Dathan Ritzenhein wants to go out in. The pace will be determined at the technical meeting, but Ritz has his game plan and if the conditions are right he may run faster than last year. He sees the downside that the young Kenyans may not. Ritz says he averaged 120 to 130 miles per week in preparation for Chicago.
