95th annual Japan open championships, held in Kumagaya, Saitama Japan. Women's open 1500m finals.

Mika Kobayashi (#117 Orange), 3rd on her school's depth chart at 1500m, not even top 10 among the high school ranks, 21st seeded going into the meet, had her day, winning the women's 1500 meter race on Saturday. Nine members of the field (including two teammates) had posted PRs better than today's winning time of 4:20.41, but the tactics played into the hand of the up and coming junior from Suma Gakuen High School in Hyogo. Two other high school athletes finished 5th and 7th: Kobayashi's higher ranked teammate Yui Fukuda (4:21.74) and local favorite Miki Kobayashi (4:23.13) of Saitama. The front 4 finished 0.42 apart. Not since 2005 has a high schooler won the national championship, that being Yuriko Kobayashi also from Suma Gakuen, in 4:14.55. Yuriko eventually set the national record.
