Actually, i do have some info to back this up. Steve Magness works with the Oregon Project and he wrote an info laden blog on ScienceofRunning.com. It's titled 'More on Strength Training for Runners, including core/stability...' Check it out. |

I don't think this workout is "weak" at all. First of all, their strength coach probably was a little serious when he said "this is a closed workout." Most athletes and coaches, aren't going to show you exactly everything they do. I'm sure they have other workouts that they do in the gym, but showed this general one so that people could get the idea. Also, these are middle distance runners, they're not going to be benching 300lbs. Anyone who is educated about the sport knows that. Furthermore, who is anyone to say if they are serious athletes or not? They just ran 8 miles before doing this. Let them have a little bit of fun while working out. Theres nothing wrong with that. |

Rupp trains with the Oregon Project, Solinsky with the Oregon Track Club, and Webb trains with University of Virginia's Jason Vigilante. |

@ doubter # 1 What did you do today? #2 Being a professional athlete doesn't mean you have to be uptight. #3 what validates you to assess whether these are serious athletes or not? (HATER!!!!) |

Watching this I don't get the vibe these are serious athletes. Co-Ed workouts are weak. Was that guys benching 35s?!? These guys need to stop the flirting and get to work. Leo needs to get with a competitive group. Prediction: The new Cali girl won't last beyond the summer. She is having second thoughts already. |

There is no athlete that wouldn't benefit from a solid weight training program. They could definitely take it up a notch, especially since this is an Olympic year, and being distance runners it would be extremely hard to bulk up much without dropping their miles, but still they're doing the work and its going to help them, plus its better for them to eventually build up to to higher weight slowly cause distance runners have some of the most stress put on their bodies then anyone. |

Do you have any peer reviewed research to backup the statement you just made? |

High Rep, Low Weight Training is an inferior way to develop strength; if you want STRENGTH, you need Low Rep, High Weight lifts, and if you're smart with it, you won't get big. Specific strength is developed through sprinting, plyometrics, and general running training...not leg toss, shoulder shrugs, etc. |

I'm not sure where you are getting your information, but power lifting is what is gone for distance runners. You won't get the hypertrophy that non-endurance athletes would by lifting fewer reps and more wt, but you also aren't getting the specific strength needed. Endurance athletes have to be able to sustain multiple repetitions over the course of miles, not a few meters (or for football athletes, yards). I hear people pushing endurance athletes to be more like other sports??? WHY? Yes, general strength is great, power is great, but the best athletes and coaches will tell you, specific strength is what you need. Keep me away from meat head trainers and strength coaches. |

Solid stability work. Happy to see some frontal plane focus and the shoulder girdle work. Would love to see more actions done on a lower repetition range (and who knows, maybe this exists on a different program day). Ideally, 5 reps and sub to assist mid-distance/distance athletes in power development. This is something shown to improve their performance regardless of race distance. Gone are the days when distance runners should lift for 15-20 reps on everything. |
