I applaud your success as far as your degree and awards and paycheck but you def played media in your post. Just because Jeter said "you know" multple times in her post doesn't imply she is acaemically inept. In fact she hasa Bachelors from Cal State. Saying you know has less to do with intelligence and academia and more to do with ones comfortability in speaking publlicly and ons natura speaking habits. Saying "you kow" is the same a saying "um". If you analyze how she speaks just as you analyzed how many times she saidit, you would notice that she has a steady fluid pace when she talks, fast, but steady and fluid She says "you know" not in a way in which she doesn"t knowwhat to say next but in a way that it just comes natural for her. feel it was a srry excuse at a low blow at one of the greatest female athletes in this time. Kudos for trying though.

The worldwide hype around men's sprinters Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake and Tyson Gay has left few scraps for females like Carmelita Jeter and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce who aren't breaking world records but are putting on thrilling performances week after week. A day before her race in Birmingham, Jeter presents her case for why the women deserve some more publicity.

I grew up and ran in a time when there were very few opportunities for women in sports. My high school in NYS didn't have girls in XC or Track, Soccer, etc. They all got to play intramural field hockey or something. Maybe a little cheer leading. When I finally got the opportunity to actually coach some girls I was amazed to see how competitive they really were. After a few decades now the performances and records and starting to get more serious. Jenny Simpson, in her junior year at Colorado, in my mind was a milepost for NCAA women. Not so much a gifted runner in my mind as more of a very hard worker. Seven NCAA and American running records in one year. There are certainly many others. One thing I always like to tell the runners I used to work with, if you're near the top in California (HS) you're probably among the best in the nation. The barometer for our runners is always Mount SAC. 13,000 runners there on a big weekend, One race every 15 minutes, for two days. When it's all said and done, you pull it up on line and look at the overall performance list for the meet. All grades, all races, where are you on that list? The ones you all know, at Oregon, Stanford, Arizona State and Arizona, etc. are at the top of those lists a high schoolers. There are 38,000,000 people in California. In the Olympics we all just finished watching, the PAC-12, in all sports, has earned something like 1150 medals now. If they were a sovereign nation, the PAC-12 would be the number 4 nation in the world for Olympic Gold, Silver, and Bronze. And this year More American women than men on the team! That's not going to go away. Brace yourself guys. We aren't necessarily number one any more.
I don't think women sprinters are overshadowed by the males because of performance. They are overshadowed because Usain Bolt is a male sprinter. Usain Bolt overshadows track and field. He is arguably the biggest and most marketable face track and field has ever seen. FloJo held her own against some very popular male athletes during her time because she was marketable. There were plenty of impressive feats, WR's, AR's, OR's during the games but there was only one Usain Bolt. If it is all about performance then why is Lolo Jones still the most recognized face on the women's side. Track and Field is a business and Usain Bolt sells the best.
Although you make a good argument there is no need to state that Carmelita should not be complaining. This dates back to women solely being in the kitchen and at home. If they are supposedly not superior then why have them in athletics at all? Women have proved time and time again IN athletics that they are on the same playing field as men. The times are slower, yes, and you have to compare them relative to gender but at the same time there is no excuse for the fact that they broke the second oldest world record in all of athletics. They would've placed 7th in the mens final at beijing and in Daegu. Of course as a friendly deate I'm with Jeter on the fact that regardless you cannot try to say it's stupid for her to make her complaint. While They smashed a serious world record ppl are still going crazy over Bolts 100m and 200m in which both records were NOT world records and as well ppl aren't noticing the fact that Bolts ties are declining from his record breaking performances in Berlin. Im not hating on anyone because Bolt is impressive and the fact that ANYone is running as fast as these men and women is just remarkable Im jsut saying that at this stage in the game the women need more exposure. Men have and will always be mainstaged and it's about time the women get a spotlight. A man runs 19.21 after being banned for steroids and he gets heralded but a women runs sub 1:58 in the 200 and she gets questioned on her gender. Its not right but thats not a discussion for today so if u place an argument dont pose that lol
I think that your comment is an ignorant statement to make.I agree with Jeter that women DO deserve more recognition in Track & Field. You look at the fact that the US women broke an almost 28 yearold WORLD record and tell me that men are bigger faster and stronger. Womens world records aren't broken as easily as men's because of one reason: They are set at such high standards. Comparably the women have ALWAYS been running consistantly faster than the men. This is meaning there is never a "slow" olympics or world championships. i.e In Daegu when the winning time was no faster than 9.80. If im mistaken it was a 9.92.These women work and train just as hard as the men and are producing just as fast times. You look at a 9.8 and see that as fast for a man. 10.8 is just as fast for a female not to mention there are more cases for MEN doping in track & Field than there are women. I cannot sit here and believe that you would have the nerve to state that women deserve to be on the backburner because men are naturally bigger, stronger, and faster. Tell that to Candace Parker who the 2004 dunk contest.
