The mixed 4x400 was nothing short of a thrill on Saturday at the World Championships. And that's putting it lightly.

What seemed like a sure win for the Netherlands turned into a World record for Team U.S. after Femke Bol fell to the track just meters from the finish line.

Alexis Holmes, the former University of Kentucky star who anchored Team USA's efforts, slipped past Bol and crossed the line in 3:08.80, finishing off the win for the Americans and netting a new world record. Holmes split 48.82 on the anchor.

The Netherlands went from potentially first to a DNF after Bol dropped the baton. Great Britain picked up second in 3:11.06 while the Czech Republic was third in 3:11.98.

The U.S. was led by the efforts of Justin Robinson, Rosey Effiong, Matthew Boling and Holmes as the squad passed the U.S.'s former record of 3:09.34, which was secured in 2019 during the World Championships in Doha.

Robinson opened with a 44.47 split, before Effiong followed with a leg of 50.38 and Boling added another 45.13 marker.

The win was a first for all involved at the senior international level, including the NCAA champion Boling, who struck fame in 2019 when he ran a wind-aided 9.9 100 meter dash as a high school senior.

Robinson was an accomplished prep athlete for Hazelwood West ('20) who set a World U18 record in the 400m in 2019 with a time of 44.84 seconds.

Robinson (Arizona State), Effiong (Arkansas) and Boling (Georgia) remain NCAA athletes, while Holmes had her professional debut early this year.
