Joe Klecker Is Attempting To Break 2-Mile American Record At Millrose
The On athlete is going big this weekend in New York City, with hopes of taking down the American Record of 8:07.07 in the 2-mile.
The American 2-mile record will be on alert this weekend at the Millrose Games.
Joe Klecker, the 27-year-old reigning U.S. runner-up in the 10K, will be going after the 17-year-old mark of 8:07.07, last accomplished by Matt Tegenkamp in 2007. The American record indoors is a nearly identical 8:07.41, last produced by Galen Rupp in 2014.
The OAC and Coros-sponsored Klecker has his sights on it.
The race starts at 1:02 EST on Sunday.
But first, he'll have to contend against the likes of reigning World 1,500m champion Josh Kerr, along with his Coffee Club podcast pals Morgan McDonald and George Beamish, not to mention Cole Hocker and Grant Fisher, among others.
The Boulder-based Klecker opened up his season on Jan. 26 in Boston, clocking a 5K effort of 13:06.02.
His foray into the 2-mile distance will be his first attempt at the race since 2021 when he ran 8:11.55 outdoors at the Prefontaine Classic and previously 8:14.95 at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix that same year.
He later qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the 10K in 2021.
