A world record has fallen at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon—fittingly, in the 10,000m run.

Beatrice Chebet became the first woman to run the 10K in under 29 minutes on May 25 as she set a new world record with a time 28 minutes and 54.14 seconds.

The previous record holder, Letesenbet Gidey, ran the 10K in 29:01.03 in 2021.

At a meet named after one of America's greatest distance runners, Steve Prefontaine, Chebet, 24, beat Gudaf Tsegay with the blazing time. Four of the runners in the race finished with times that would beat the previous meet record. Tsgay nearly broke the previous world record as well with a time of 29:05.92.

Chebet is no stranger to record breaking, as she has dominated in the 5K event the last several years.

The Prefontaine Classic, or the Pre Classic, is part of the Diamond League and is the only Diamond League event in the United States. Chebet, from Kenya, was the 2022 Diamond League champion in the 5,000m in 2022.
