Here's What Happened On Day 1 At NCAA Track And Field Championships 2024
The University of Oregon Track and Field and Hayward Field host the NCAA Track and Field Championships on June 5-8. Here's a Day 1 recap
The biggest weekend in college track and field begins in Track Town USA, as the University of Oregon and Hayward Field host the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The meet begins on June 5 and ends June 8 after crowning the latest set of NCAA Track and Field champions.
Day 1 of the meet will feature all men's events and several NCAA finals including:
- 10,000 Meters, Final, Men
- Hammer
- Pole Vault
- Javelin
- Long Jump
- Shot Put
Day 1 marks the start of a busy June at Hayward Field, as the famed stadium also will host the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on June 21. Some of the same athletes competing this weekend will compete for a chance to go to Paris later this summer.

Men's 4x400 Final Set For 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships
Many track and field enthusiasts will say the greatest, and maybe the only true team aspect of the sport, is the relays.
The second men's relay of the 2024 NCAA Track and Field Championships, the 4x400, is one step closer to having a champion, as the semifinals took place Wednesday night in Oregon.
The Florida Gators are looking to win the event for the third consecutive time and will have that chance after advancing in third place Wednesday night with a time of 3:01.78.
Texas A&M topped the semifinal standings with 3:01.17, followed by Arkansas (3:01.56).
Arizona State, the runner-up in 2023, grabbed the final spot for Friday's final (3:04.48), while UCLA, which finished third last year, missed the nine-team final by one spot.
Florida used a time of 2:57.74 to successfully defend its title a year ago.
The Gators' opportunity for a three-peat will take place Friday at 11:21 p.m. Eastern.

Despite Fall, New Mexico Freshman Wins 10,000-Meter Battle At 2024 NCAA Championships
Despite some stumbles and tumbles in the men's 10,000-meter race at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, New Mexico freshman Habtom Samuel was able to pick himself up and take home his first national title Wednesday in Oregon.
Samuel, who entered the race ranked No. 3 in the nation, finished strong to claim the victory with a final time of 28:07.82, less than one second ahead of Alabama junior Victor Kiprop (28:08.59) and Oklahoma State freshman Denis Kipngetich (28:10.25).

Ole Miss Star Robinson-O'Hagan Picks Up Shot Put Double
Ole Miss sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan put the finishing touches on a dominant season with the men's shot put title at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
It was the first outdoor shot put title for the Rebels and made Robinson-O'Hagan the 17th athlete in NCAA Division I history to win the indoor and outdoor crowns in the same season.
The win Wednesday in Oregon was earned with a personal-best throw of 20.88m (68-6). Wisconsin junior Jason Swarens was second (20.38m), and South Carolina junior Dylan Targgart finished third (20.23m).
The victory for Robinson-O'Hagan also served as redemption, following a disappointing seventh-place finish in the men's hammer throw earlier Wednesday.

USC Sophomore Takes Men's Long Jump Title At 2024 NCAA Track And Field Championships
USC sophomore Chrstyn John made light work of the men's long jump at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, winning by 6 inches over Florida State senior Jeremiah Davis.
John won with a personal-best and college-leading distance of 8.22m (26-11 3/4), and Davis managed 8.07m (26-5 3/4). Florida's Malcolm Clemons finished third with 8.05m. Davis and Clemons had season-best performances Wednesday.

Men's Javelin Title Claimed At 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships
Georgia senior Marc Minichello is a two-time national champion in the men's javelin.
He won the event Wednesday in Oregon with a throw of 80.70 meters (264-9), finishing ahead of Washington senior Chandler Ault, who used a personal-best 79.31 to land in second place.
Minichello's winning toss came in Round 2, and Ault got the job done in Round 5. Miami (Fla.) junior Devoux Deysel finished third (75.14).
Minchello also won the title in 2022.

Finals Set For Men's 800 Meters At 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships
There was a delay due to a protest, but names are in, and nine athletes will get to compete for the men's 800-meter national title Friday in Oregon, including a pair of Texas A&M teammates.
Texas A&M junior Sam Whitmarsh led the way with a time of 1:46.01 and was followed by Clemson senior Tarees Rhoden (1:46.18) and Texas A&M junior Kimar Farquharson (1:46.32).

2024 Men's Pole Vault Title Headed To Kentucky
Kentucky senior Keaton Daniel is the 2024 NCAA men's pole vault champion after clearing a height of 5.67m (18-7 1/4) on Wednesday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
The performance was the best of the season for Daniel, who finished tied for eighth place in 2023.
This year's runner-up was Kansas junior Clayton Simms (5.62). Five competitors cleared 5.52 meters.

Hinchliffe ran a blazing 10.083 at Hayward Field to finish just ahead of Auburn freshman Kanyinsola Ajayi (10.085), while Northwestern State senior Zachaeus Beard was third (10.12).

Men's 110-Meter Hurdles Semifinals Wrap Up At 2024 NCAA Track And Field Championships
The semifinals of the men's 110-meter hurdles took place Wednesday night at Hayward Field in Oregon, and nine athletes now are one step closer to becoming national champions.
The finals of the event are set for Friday at 9:42 p.m. Eastern.
The fastest time of the day belonged to Auburn freshman Ja'Kobe Tharp with a personal-best 13.18. Nebraska senior Darius Luff was second (13.31), and Houston senior De'Vion Wilson was third (13.34).

Men's Hammer Throw Concludes At 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships
University of California senior Rowan Hamilton (77.18m) edged defending national champion Kenneth Ikeji of Harvard (77.12m) to win the 2024 men's hammer throw national title Wednesday at Hayward Field.
The performance for Hamilton, also a three-time NAIA national champion, was a personal-best and came on his third attempt of the day. Ikeji's effort was his best of the season, but short of his title-winning toss in 2023 (77.92m).

Men's Decathlon Kicks Off Action At 2024 NCAA Track And Field Championships
The first half of the men's decathlon (10 events) kicked off the action at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, with the afternoon's festivities including the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 meters.
Defending national champion Leo Neugebauer, a senior from the University of Texas, is the overall leader after the first day of competition with a collegiate-record 4,685 points. He leads Mississippi State sophomore Peyton Bair by more than 450 points (4,428), while Iowa senior Austin West is third at 4,272.
Neugebauer won the title in 2023 with a record score (collegiate) of 8,836 points, which also was the eighth-best score in the history of the event. He was the runner-up in 2022.
In Wednesday's five events, Neugebauer was first in the long jump with a personal-best 7.86, first in the shot put with a personal-best 17.46m, first in the high jump with a personal-best 2.07m, third in 100 (10.634) and sixth in the 400 (48.03).
Neugebauer also won the heptathlon at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships and was named USTFCCCA Indoor National Field Athlete of the Year for 2024.
Decathlon competition will resume Thursday at 2:30 p.m. Eastern with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters.

Where Is The NCAA Track And Field Championships? It's Going To Be At Hayward Field
Last year, the 2023 NCAA Track and Field Championships were held in Austin, Texas, but it won't be back there any time soon.
For now, the home of the biggest outdoor college track and field meet in the sport lives in Eugene. Hayward Field is hosting the meet every year until 2027.
This is the 15th time Eugene, or "Track Town, USA" as it's called, has hosted the meet.
Here are the future dates:
- 2024: Eugene, Ore., Hayward Field, June 5-8
- 2025: Eugene, Ore., Hayward Field, June 11-14
- 2026: Eugene, Ore., Hayward Field, June 10-13
- 2027: Eugene, Ore., Hayward Field, June 9-12
