The second day of the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships from Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. will showcase the top women's college stars in the sport on June 6. 

And that includes Parker Valby. 

The Florida runner and 2023 NCAA cross country champion will seek to cap her record-breaking season with a national championship in the 10,000m. Valby is the NCAA record holder in the 10K, which she accomplished two months ago at the Bryan Clay Invitational.

The 10K, the decathlon (the only men's event on Thursday), and five field events will have finals on Day 2. 

The field events with finals are: 

  • Women's Hammer 
  • Women's Pole Vault
  • Women's Javelin
  • Women's Long Jump 
  • Women's Shot Put

Leo Neugebauer Smashes Collegiate Decathlon Record, Repeats As NCAA Champion

The records continued to fall for University of Texas multi star Leo Neugebauer and on Thursday he won his second consecutive men’s decathlon title at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, this time with a collegiate and German national record of 8,961 points. That performance was eighth-best in history.

The 23-year-old German used the momentum of a record opening day to cruise to victory at Hayward Field, finishing his day with a 4:44.61 in the 1,500m.

He finished 830 points ahead of Mississippi State sophomore Peyton Bair (8,131) - who reached 8,000 for the first time in his career - and was more than 900 points ahead of Miami (Florida) sophomore Edgar Campre (8,042).

Neugebauer’s score topped the 8,836 points he collected on the way to the national championship in 2023.

Parker Valby Earns Her Fifth NCAA Title & Breaks Meet Record In The Women's 10,000m  

The 21-year-old Florida phenom who broke the collegiate 10,000m record in 30:50.43 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in April collected her fifth NCAA title tonight in the 10,000m and also broke the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships meet record. 

Valby, who also owns the indoor 5,000m collegiate record, blasted off in the final mile to stamp out runner-up Hilda Olemomoi, who also ran very well and delivered a 31:51.89 PR.

McKenzie Long, who already finished first in the 4x100m relay semifinals with Ole Miss and first in the 100m semifinals, also finished first in the 200m semifinals with an eye-popping 21.95. 

That time is the third-fastest in NCAA history behind Abby Steiner (21.80; 2022) and Julien Alfred (21.91; 2023), and also improves her own world lead in the event by .08.

New Javelin Collegiate Record Set By Nebraska's Rhema Otabor

At the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track And Field Championships, Nebraska senior Rhema Otabor obliterated the collegiate javelin record of 62.19m set in 2016 by Maggie Malone by unfurling a 64.19m throw that allowed her to come from behind in the competition and claim the title in the event.

That mark is also a national record for the Bahamas and a school record for Nebraska.

Otabor, who led collegiate performers this year in the javelin, blew past her former PR of 59.49m on her way toward making history.

Ackelia Smith Defends NCAA Outdoor Women's Long Jump Title 

Texas junior Ackelia Smith successfully defended her NCAA outdoor title in the women's long jump by launching 6.79m and narrowly beating the runner-up, Florida senior Claire Bryant, by .05m. 

Per John Bianco of the University of Texas Athletic Department, Smith is the first Longhorn woman in 18 years to win back-to-back titles in an NCAA outdoor field event since Destinee Hooker in the high jump (2006-07) and the first woman nationally to win consecutive NCAA outdoor long jump crowns since 2002-03 (Elva Goulbourne, Auburn).

Reigning SEC champion Grace Stark of Florida turned in a 12.52 in the women's 100m hurdles semifinal to finish first heading into Saturday's final (6:12 p.m. ET).

Alabama's Doris Lemngole Leads Women's 3000m Steeplechase Qualifiers; Notre Dame Duo Olivia Markezich, Sophie Novak Work Together To Advance

Doris Lemngole of Alabama cruised into the women's 3000m steeplechase final with a leading time of 9:38.69. Lemngole, a freshman, finished runner-up at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Championships and third at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships in the open 3000m. She currently leads the NCAA this season with a time of 9:22.31.

In a terrific display of teamwork from heat two, 2023's women's 3000m steeplechase champion Olivia Markezich and her teammate, Sophie Novak, paced each other to qualifying for Saturday's final (5:54 p.m. ET).

Shannon Flockhart Almost Breaks NCAA Championships Meet Record In The Women's 1500m During Semifinals

Providence's Shannon Flockhart was just .01 seconds off of Sinclaire Johnson's meet record as she led all qualifiers to Saturday's final (5:41 p.m. ET) with the fifth-fastest 1500m time in collegiate history: 4:05.99.

Maia Ramsden of Harvard, last year's 1500m champion, was the second-fastest qualifier as she won heat two in 4:06.00—remarkably close to what Flockhart ran in heat one. 

Flockhart's teammate, Kimberley May, also advanced to the final in sixth overall with a 4:07.56.

In all, 12 women broke 4:10 during the semifinals, but only 11 of them made the final due to the advancement policy, which is top five from each heat, plus the next two best times.

Earlier today, it was announced that Flockhart and May both signed a NIL deal with New Balance.

Elisabet Rut Runarsdottir Hits Lifetime Best To Win Women's Hammer Throw

With a 70.47m PR that was also good for a collegiate lead, Iceland national record-holder Elisabet Rut Runarsdottir topped the competition at Hayward Field to win the 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field women's hammer throw title. Rut Runarsdottir's winning performance arrived on her third throw.

The Texas State sophomore has been on a tear all season, beating her 2023 best of 66.98m (which she recorded at last year's NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships for seventh place) twice and becoming the 2024 season's first woman in the NCAA to exceed 70m in March.

For now, the home of the biggest outdoor college track and field meet in the sport lives in Eugene. Hayward Field will be hosting the meet every year until 2027.

This is the 15th time Eugene, or "Track Town, USA" as it's called, has hosted the meet. 

Here are the future dates: 

  • 2024: Eugene, Ore., Hayward Field, June 5-8    
  • 2025: Eugene, Ore., Hayward Field, June 11-14    
  • 2026: Eugene, Ore., Hayward Field, June 10-13    
  • 2027: Eugene, Ore., Hayward Field, June 9-12
