Jane Hedengren Chasing Sadie Engelhardt's Mile National Record
Early last month, Timpview (Utah) standout Jane Hedengren solo'd one of the greatest performances in history, running 4:36.23 over 1600m at the REP Distance Challenge in Kearns, Utah. With the Utah Olympic Oval sitting over nearly 4500 feet above sea level, Hedengren's performance is awe-inspiring before factoring in the altitude. When converted to a full mile (4:37.83), the BYU signee's performance ranks her No. 9 in high school history indoors. However, when factoring in the altitude, the senior's time adjusts to 4:30.44, which would be the third-fastest performance in high school history.
For the first time this year, Hedengren is set to have some competition throughout the majority of the race, including Dylan McElhinney (Hunter College Campus), Zariel Macchia (William Floyd), Ellery Lincoln (Lincoln), Addy Ritzenhein (Niwot), and teammate Lily Alder. All five girls sport PBs of 4:45 or faster, and could all leave New York with big-time performances.
The indoor national record is a blistering 4:27.97, set by Ventura (Calif.) superstar Sadie Engelhardt, at the 117th Millrose Games last month.
Historically Loaded 200m Field Looking For Fast Performances
This one's going to be fun!
A talented contingent of sprinters are chasing history this weekend, hoping to snag some hardware while re-writing the record books. As the second-fastest boy in the country this year, it's hard to bet against future Georgia Bulldog and Allen (Texas) star Jonathan Simms. The senior won the 200m at the Texas Tech Wes Kittley meet in January, running 20.95, the 16th fastest time ever run by a high schooler.
Though Simms is the fastest on paper, he'll have his work cut out for him regardless of who makes it through to the final. Despite not racing yet this season, Kendrick Jones. Jr. is the defending champion and is making his season debut on the biggest stage. Jones Jr. has run a pair of outdoor 400m races, recently running 45.27 at the Texas A&M Bluebonnet High School Invitational, making him the 15th-fastest high schooler ever before the indoor season is even finished. The Lake Belton's (Texas) senior's PB in the 200m is 21.18 indoors, but a quick 20.57 on the outdoor oval.
Pennsylvania's Jayden Horton-Mims has run 21.06 this year, and matched the 300m national record of 32.64 just over a month ago. Harlan's (Texas) Tate Taylor and Harriton's (Pa.) Ade Lloyd has each run 21.09 and 21.29, respectively, adding them both to the list of contenders this weekend.
Duncanville's (Texas) Brayden Williams is coming off of a wind-aided 9.99 performance over the weekend, just the fifth sub-10 performance in high school history. He hasn't run a 200m since last July, but it's clear he's in shape and ready to let it rip.
Trio Of Distance Medley Relay Contenders Eyeing Sub-12:00
Whether it's Cornwall (N.Y.), Santiago Corona (Calif.), Niwot (Colo.), or another squad, the winner of the Championship DMR this weekend is going to have to earn it.
Cornwall is the top seed and currently sits at No. 5 on the national leaderboard, and has the quartet of Olivia Cibirka, Madeline Larkin, Noemi Goitia, and Sophia Semo slated to run. Semo sports a quick 4:41 PB for 1500m, meaning she can bring her Dragon squad home around 5:00. While Cornwall has already proved themselves as one of the top relays in the country this season, they are going up against some of the best distance programs in the nation.
Coming from San Diego, the duo of Rylee Blade and Braelyn Combe is going to be dangerous and eager to close the race out with a vengeance. After their squad ran 11:55.93 outdoors last weekend, the No. 3 team in the country is ready for some fun. Blade and Combe are set to run the 800m and 1600m leg according to the entries, with Blade sporting a 2:14 PB in the distance, while Combe has gone as fast as 4:39.
Another true contender is none other than the distance powerhouse out of Colorado, Niwot. Led by 2023 NXN Champ Addy Ritzenhein, the Cougars have the firepower to take down the field. Joined by distance standouts Elise Hagen and Anna Prok, there's no telling what this squad can do. Ritzenhein owns a 4:40 PB in the 1600m, while Hagen, the 1200m leg, has clocked 5:02 for 1600m.
Prok is on the 800m leg and has a lifetime best of 2:12.66.
