Sha'Carri Richardson Arrested In Seattle, Case Has Been Cleared

Superstar sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson made headlines when she opted out of the 100-meter semifinals at the 2025 Toyota USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Friday, but that wasn't the top story involving the reigning world champion for long.

News outlets across the globe, including the New York Times, began posting reports Friday evening about Richardson being arrested and detained Sunday at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after an altercation with her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman.

Police reports obtained and cited by numerous media outlets stated that the 25-year-old Richardson was held for 19 hours and charged with fourth-degree domestic violence after shoving Coleman during their public argument, but the case was cleared when Coleman chose not to press charges.

The two athletes were headed to the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships being held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, from July 31 through Aug. 3 to determine the United States' roster for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September.

As the 2023 world champion in the 100m, Richardson already earned an automatic spot for the upcoming meet in Tokyo, which is why she was able to withdraw from this week's 100m semifinals without concern for her spot in Japan.

Despite the delay, both athletes made it to Hayward Field in time to compete in the first round of the 100-meter events, and both advanced to the semifinals.

Following her world championship in 2023, Richardson went on to win a silver medal in the 100 at the 2024 Summer Olympics and helped Team USA to the gold medal in the women's 4x100 relay.

Coleman is a five-time world champion - three outdoor and two indoor - two-time winner at the Diamond League Final (2018, 2023) and a multi-time NCAA champion, along with many other accolades.
