Olympic Silver Medalist Fred Kerley Provisionally Suspended
Olympic Silver Medalist Fred Kerley Provisionally Suspended
Fred Kerley has been provisionally suspended by the AIU for whereabouts failures.

This afternoon, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced that it has provisionally suspended Fred Kerley as a result of whereabouts failures.
Kerley was issued a Notice of Charge today, August 12. According to the AIU, any combination of three whereabouts failure within a 12-month period would constitute an anti-doping violation.

If the suspension is upheld, Kerley would be suspended for a minimum of one year with the baseline sanction being two years of ineligibility.
Shortly after the announcement by the AIU, Kerley responded on X with a statement from his attorney. That statement read:
"Fred Kerley has already notified the AIU that he intends to contest the allegation that he has violated the anti-doping rules related to whereabouts failures, as he strongly believes that one or more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate him at his designated location. Fred will not comment further at this time out of respect for the process, and looks forward to presenting his case to the appointed hearing panel."
A whereabouts failure can occur under five circumstances. The AIU lists those circumstances as the following:
- You have failed to submit your whereabouts by the required deadline (Filing Failure).
- You have failed to update your whereabouts or you have not updated them as soon as possible after a change of circumstances (Filing Failure).
- You have filed your whereabouts on time but they are incomplete or inaccurate or insufficient to enable us to locate you for testing (training address missing, home address too vague, competition schedule missing or incomplete, no address of temporary accommodation during competition…) (Filing Failure).
- The Athletics Integrity Unit finds out that your whereabouts are inaccurate or incomplete following an unsuccessful attempt to test you (e.g. an athlete lives in a gated complex and fails to give instructions to the security gate to let the doping control officer in) (Filing Failure).
- You have filed whereabouts information but you are not available for testing at the location corresponding to your 60-minute time slot (Missed Test).
Kerley most recently missed the USATF Championships. He shared the following message on Instagram:
""The 100m should be a straight sprint. 2025 has presented many hurdles. Taking some time out to get back on track. No USATF Champs this year. Thanks to all my supporters."
In 2024, Kerley earned an Olympic Bronze Medal in the 100m. In 2021, he earned an Olympic Silver Medal in the 100m at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
