Day 3 of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo sets up a packed schedule across road, field, and track events.

Day 3 at the World Athletics Championships opened with high drama. Tanzania’s Alphonce Felix Simbu outleaned Germany’s Amanal Petros in the closest men’s marathon finish in meet history, both clocking 2:09:48.

Hammer throw qualifying saw Canada’s Ethan Katzberg launch 81.85m to top Group B, while Hungary’s Bence Halász led Group A at 78.42. In women’s pole vault, 14 cleared 4.60m, including Americans Katie Moon and Sandi Morris.

Jasmine Jones of the U.S. paced women’s 400m hurdles qualifying in 53.18, with Olympic champion Femke Bol also advancing. The women’s steeple heats featured Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai leading in 9:07.68.

The evening session is headlined by medals and marquee races. Action begins with heats of the men’s 400m hurdles and long jump qualification, followed by the men’s pole vault final.

The program builds toward the women’s hammer throw final, semifinals in the women’s 100m hurdles, and men’s 1500m semifinals. Distance fans will see the men’s 3000m steeplechase final, before the night closes with the women’s 100m hurdles final.

With medals on the line and big names in play, Day 3 promises drama from the streets of Tokyo to the stadium track.

6:44am ET - Men's Pole Vault Finals - 9:45am Update * WORLD RECORD

All the favorites are through 5.75m, with Mondo passing after a brilliant open over 5.55m.

We are now through 5.85m, with all the favorites through. Mondo has cleared and will pass to 5.95m. Karalis and Lavillenie will rejoin after this height.

Sam Kendricks takes one failure at 5.90m, but passes his next two attempts to 5.95m. He fails on his second attempt, but makes a last ditch clearance at 5.95m to move on up.

Karalis has a miss at 5.95m as well, while Mondo was clear over.

Four are over 5.95m. Karalis waited until his final attempt to make it over, a shocker for the surprise vaulter of the season.

Only two men are over 6.00m. Mondo Duplantis over easily, while Emmanouli Karalis cleared on his first attempt, after struggles at 5.95m.

The field has passed to 6.10m. Karalis has a near miss at a National Record. Mondo clears easily.

Karalis has a very close miss again at 6.15m. The bar moves up to 6.20m, and Karalis has his final miss. He'll take Silver, Kurtis Marschall (AUS) in third, and Sam Kendricks (USA) in 4th based on jumpbacks.

Mondo is deciding whether or not to continue after achieving Gold.

Mondo moves the bar up 6.30m. His first attempt is a miss. His second attempt is much closer, just nipping the bar.

WORLD RECORD

Mondo Duplantis sets his fourth World Record of the Season, with the largest winning margin in history.

9:20am ET - Women's 100H Finals

The field is set for a loaded final.

World Leader Masai Russell (USA) is in Lane 7. World Record Holder Tobi Amusan (NGR) in Lane 6. World #2 this year Grace Stark (USA) in 5. And reigning World Champion Danielle Williams (JAM) in Lane 4.

What a race!

The Swiss Ditaji Kambundji comes through the finish in first place, the most consistent race of the full heat. Wins in 12.24 in a new National Record. Grace Stark had a brilliant start, but moves to third in 12.34, while Tobi Amusan takes second with a strong second half of the race in 12.29.

That is the fastest wind-legal winning time ever.

8:55am ET - Men's 3000m Steeplechase Finals

Can Soufianne El Bakkali (MAR) come away with another global title? Or will the upset occur?

17-year old Edmund Serem (KEN) leads Diamond League Champ Fredrik Ruppert (GER) through the opening lap with El Bakkali in dead last at the back of the pack.

It's a very slow opening 1K, at 3:04 for the split. American Daniel Michalski is currently in 4th, El Bakkali still in last. Expect the kick to start in the latter stages of the race.

2000m at 6:01, and El Bakkali and Girma are still in dead last. They'll need a kick to become relevant relatively soon. American Michalski is now leading Serem.

Two laps to go, Michalski breaks open the field, forcing the move from the field. Girma moves up to second, Bakalli moving up as well.

What a final lap!

Girma leads through 300m to go. El Bakkali moves to the lead at 200m. But from nowhere, Geordie Beamish (NZL) storms down the final straightaway, passing Bakkali at the line to win in 8:33.88, after falling down in the prelims.

Edmund Serem takes the Bronze medal at only 17 years old.

8:28am ET - Men's 1500m Semis

Two heats.

First heat will showcase Josh Kerr (GBR), Niels Laros (NED), Ethan Strand (USA), Jacob Wightman (GBR) and Timothy Cheruiyot (KEN).

Kerr leads 60-seconds through the first lap, leaving the race open for the kickers. 2-minutes through 800m, and no major changes. Laros moves to the outside. It's a wild finish. Strand was in last with 100m to go, but couldn't make enough ground to qualify. Laros and Kerr finish shoulder-to-shoulder, Wightman and Cheruiyot are the next through, and Coscoran and Pihlstrom rounding out the Top 6. The heat was won in 3:35.50 by Laros.

Heat two will feature Cole Hocker (USA), Jonah Koech (USA), Isaac Nader (POR), and Reynold Cheruiyot (KEN).

Cole Hocker stretches out the field in 58.40 for the opening lap. A big fall takes out Riva (ITA) and Malleck (CAN) at 500m. It's 1:58 through 800m, led by Hocker. Cheruiyot takes the win, while Cole Hocker was in very dangerous territory. He had to muscle his way past the German athlete to find position, which may come under review. Hocker takes second overall to qualify. Jonah Koech takes fifth and moves on as well.

8:05am ET - Women's 110HH Semis

Three heat semi-final here.

In the first heat, Grace Stark is 5th All-Time after this year, taking on Nugent of Jamaica and Kambundji of Switzerland. After a false start in Lane 9, those three are the class of the field, with Stark winning in 12.37, with Kambundji taking second in 12.44, with Nugent waiting on time in third with 12.63.

Heat two will feature American Alaysha Johnson taking on World Record Holder Tobi Amusan, and Silesia Diamond League Champ Nadine Visser. Amusan takes the heat in a strong 12.36, Visser in second at 12.45. Johnson finishes fourth in 12.66, with no chance to move on. Nugent is now on the bubble from Heat 1.

The final heat showcases US Record Holder Masai Russell and Indoor WR Holder Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas. Russell takes a hard-fought win, with Danielle Williams of Jamaica taking second. Charlton takes third at 12.51, which will be good enough to be a timed qualifier.

The finals are set for later tonight.

8:00am ET - Women's Hammer Finals

Olympic Champ Cam Rogers of Canada opens the competition with a throw of 78.09m.

Through the first round, Rogers leads, with the People's Republic of China making up the Silver and Bronze slots so far.

Rogers with a monster throw of 80.51m to open up on her second throw, putting the field on notice.

The standings do not change. Both Chinese athletes improve upon their marks on their final throw, but do not change position. Rogers World Leader was unchallenged, winning with her first throw ever over 80m. American Deanna Price finishes 5th in 75.10m

7:22am ET - Men's 110HH Prelims

In heat one, American Dylan Beard will get the competition going. The Walmart athlete had a very rough start, but managed to come through with a win in 13.28, most likely exerting more energy than originally planned to get back in the race.

Heat two features Ja'Kobe Tharp, the young American Champion, only 19 years old. A blanket finish gives a little bit of pressure. Tharp takes third in his heat at 13.28, but it was 13.27 from Jason Joseph of Switzerland to win the heat, with another 13.28 in second.

Heat three is a little more relaxed. Top feature is World Rank 12 Orlando Bennett of Jamaica. And it is Bennett who takes it in 13.20, the fast qualifying time so far.

Heat four will debut Cordell Tinch, who's been on a tear all season. Enrique Llopis takes the heat convincingly, while Cordell Tinch didn't have the snappy race we've seen from him over the Diamond League circuit. He qualifies in third at 13.31, behind Llopis win at 13.22.

Heat five sees Grant Holloway open up his weekend in the final prelim, taking on hometown favorite Rachid Muratake. Holloway gets a great start, and commands the race through Hurdle 8, but then the defending champ begins to fade. He falls back to fourth, with a 13.27, getting the Auto-Q, but not in the way he would have wanted. Muratake also getting nipped at the line in 13.22, with Tyler Mason of Jamaica winning in 13.17, putting their country 1-2 in fastest qualifying times.

6:50am ET - Men's Long Jump Prelims

Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou opens up his first attempt with the first Big Q of the competition, hitting 8.17m.

Lester Lescay of Germany joins the auto-Q with a new lead of 8.21 on Attempt 2.

Tahjay Gayle gets all of the board on Attempt 3, hitting a new lead of 8.28m.

Almost right after, Gayle's countryman Nikaoli Williams hits the auto-Q in 8.15.

American Isaac Grimes makes the final with a qualifying mark of 8.04m.

6:44am ET - Men's Pole Vault Finals

All the favorites are through 5.75m, with Mondo passing after a brilliant open over 5.55m

6:34am ET - Men's 400m Prelims

In the first heat, American Chris Robinson takes on heat favorite Abderrahman Samba of Qatar. Samba controls the race, with Robinson in second over the 8th hurdle. The field is swallowing up second place, with four people in a blanket finish behind Samba, the clear winner. Chris Robinson gets the Auto-Q in third, with four people within 0.02 seconds.

In heat two, one of the "Big 3" of 400m Hurdles is set to feature. Brazil's Allison Dos Santos is the 2022 World Champion (and Championship Record Holder), and will be open in Lane 4. - It's a textbook run for Dos Santos, who looks very relaxed throughout the race. He eases up at the line, taking second and qualifying through with a 48.48, just behind Bassem Hemeida in 48.43 who was decidedly more pressed.

In heat three, the Viking Karsten Warholm of Norway will debut in Lane 9. Fastest in the World this year, Olympic Champion, World Record Holder, it should be a smooth run into the Semi's. - It's a strong first 200m for Warholm, and the field went with him. He shuts it down with 150m to go, and take a look around before crossing the finish. He's in third across the line, looking very relaxed, but his time of 48.56 will get him on. Matheus Lima of Brazil wins in 48.15.

Heat four will see American Rai Benjamin fill the lane just vacated by Warholm, Lane 9. Benjamin beat Warholm in the last Olympics, and is the biggest challenge for the title. -  Benjamin looks very relaxed over the first 300m, looking over his shoulder on Hurdle 8 to see his position. It looked very easy, moreso than anyone else, crossing the line in first with a 48.15.

The final heat will have American Caleb Dean take on Nigeria's Ezekiel Nathaniel, 5th in the World this year. As expected, Nathaniel comes away with a comfortable win at 48.37, with NCAA Champion Dean taking second in 48.67.

All the favorites are through, coming back for the Semis in 48hrs time.

We're back for the evening session. Good weather looks to beget good performances, with three finals on tap.

Women’s 100m Final: Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (USA) blasted to gold in 10.61 seconds, in a convincing fashion. Tina Clayton (JAM) and Julien Alfred (LCA) rounded out the podium. Some big names like Shericka Jackson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finished but were off the top spots.

Men’s 100m Final: Oblique Seville (JAM) won in 9.77 s, beating out compatriot Kishane Thompson and U.S. speedster Noah Lyles. The race confirmed Jamaica’s sprinting depth, especially as Lyles and others couldn’t close the gap.

Men’s 10,000m Final: Jimmy Gressier pulled off a surprise win in a tactical race slowed by heat, timing his final kick perfectly to edge out Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha. Kejelcha was just milliseconds behind. Andreas Almgren (SWE) claimed bronze, and overall it was a closely packed battle to the line.

Women’s Discus Throw Final: Valarie Allman finally captured the world title with a dominant 69.48 m throw, ending her long wait despite being Olympic champion. Van Klinken (NED) and Morales (CUB) also threw well, with Morales pulling off a personal best to take bronze. The competition saw several athletes close but not quite matching their seasonal bests.

Day 2 Morning Session Highlights

Peres Jepchirchir captured the women’s marathon in 2:24:43, outkicking Tigst Assefa (2:24:45) in a tactical finish. On the track, the men’s 1500m heats produced a shock: Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen did not advance, ending hopes of a rematch with Britain’s Josh Kerr. Heat winners and safe qualifiers included Narve Gilje Nordås (NOR), Kerr (GBR), Jake Wightman (GBR), Cole Hocker (USA) and Timothy Cheruiyot (KEN).

The morning session featured women’s hammer qualification. Finland’s Silja Kosonen led Group A at 75.88 with American DeAnna Price close behind at 74.99, while Brooke Andersen recorded no mark in a surprise exit.

Women’s 100m hurdles heats advanced a deep field. Danielle Williams (JAM) led in 12.40, with Grace Stark (USA) and Nadine Visser (NED) next best. Other qualifiers included Ackera Nugent, Ditaji Kambundji, Tobi Amusan, Devynne Charlton, Pia Skrzyszowska and Maayke Tjin-A-Lim. Megan Tapper (JAM) did not start.
