All Eyes Are On Kerr Ahead Of London Diamond League World Record Attempt

Josh Kerr has proven championship pedigree across the middle distance events, having earned multiple Olympic medals and world championship titles across the 1500m and 3,000m. This season, however, he has his eyes set on another challenge: rewriting the history books, and stamping his name at the top.

At the upcoming London Diamond League on Saturday, July 18, Kerr will attempt to break the longstanding outdoor mile world record of 3:43.13, set by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco in 1999. It's challenging a task made even more difficult, with the likes of Olympic 1500m bronze medalist Yared Nuguse, who's been having an impressive season, also in the field.

Josh Kerr is no stranger to world records, though, already having one under his belt from the 2024 Millrose Games, where he set the 2 mile indoor world best. Can he add another one to his list of impressive achievements this weekend?

With the world's eyes on London, and Kerr's own promises to make it a show worth watching, let's take a look back at his career arc over the past 9 years.

2017: Josh Kerr takes down Edward Cheserek and a loaded field to win the 2017 NCAA Indoor Mile title

2018: Kerr doubles as NCAA Indoor Mile Champion, and goes on to set the then-NCAA 1500m outdoor record in 3:35.01 before turning pro at the end of the season

2019: At the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Kerr reaches the 1500m final and places 6th

2021: At the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which were held in 2021, Kerr earns Olympic bronze in the 1500m.

2022: At the Boston Last Chance meet, Kerr set a new British National record and then-European record of 3:48.87 in the indoor mile, breaking the previous European record which stood for nearly 40 years.

2023: Josh's momentum over the middle distances continued, as he won gold at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

2024: Kerr sets the new indoor 2-mile world best at the Millrose Games in a time of 8:00.67. He later won the World Indoor 3,00m title, before going on to win a second Olympic medal, this time silver, at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

2025: Stepping up in distance, Kerr won the British Athletics 5,000m title. Later that season, in the 1500m at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships, he suffered an injury to his calf. He managed to finish the race despite the injury

2026: Kerr has challenged himself across distances from the 800m through the 3,000m, adding a second World Indoor gold medal to his collection in the latter event. The stage is now set for the world record attempt in London.

This Saturday, July 18 at the London Diamond League, Josh Kerr will attempt to break the mile world record. Watch ALL of the action beginning at 8:15 AM ET, with the mile scheduled for 10:36 AM ET.
