The USATF Outdoor Championships take center stage this week, and while there isn't a U.S. team to qualify for in 2026 due to the absence of a global championship, the meet still carries significant importance for many athletes.

For some, the championships serve as an opportunity to shake off the rust after injury, most notably Olympic champion Quincy Hall, who is set to return to competition. For others, however, the stakes are even higher.
Athletes sitting just outside the top 16 in the World Athletics Rankings have a chance to improve their position with a strong performance at USATF Nationals. A podium finish (or even a national title) could provide the ranking points needed to move into qualification position for the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, scheduled for September in Budapest.
While there is still time remaining in the season to earn additional ranking points, this week's championships could prove to be one of the biggest opportunities to climb the standings.
Here are the American athletes currently just outside the top 16 in their respective events, based on the World Athletics Rankings as of July 14.
Women
- Jenna Prandini — No. 17, 200m
- Alexis Holmes — No. 21, 400m
- Heather MacLean — No. 19, 1500m
- Kaylee Mitchell — No. 17, 3000m Steeplechase
Men
- Courtney Lindsey — No. 21, 100m
- Chris Robinson — No. 17, 400m Hurdles
- Daniel Michalski — No. 18, 3000m Steeplechase
- Austin Miller — No. 17, Pole Vault
With valuable ranking points on the line and several weeks still remaining in the outdoor season, these athletes have an opportunity to put themselves in position for a trip to Budapest. A breakthrough performance at USATF Nationals could be the first step toward securing one of the coveted top-16 spots before the qualification window closes.
