Puma extends contract with Usain Bolt

Puma announced the sportswear company has extended their contract with six-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt through the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro.

No financial figures or details of the deal were disclosed, but his previous deal with Puma reportedly paid approximately $9 million per year. Bolt was among the world’s highest paid athletes by Forbes in 2012 by adding up money earned from race winnings, bonuses, appearance fees and other sponsors like Gatorade and Virgin Media.

[Update: Andre Lowe of the Jamaica Gleaner reports the new deal is worth $10 million annually.]

Bolt is coming off a summer where he won three gold medals at the IAAF World Championships in the men’s 100-meters, 200-meters and 4x100-meter relay.

In early September, Bolt announced he planned on retiring from the sport after the 2016 Olympics, but has since backtracked on his word. This new contract with Puma will most likely last to the end of his career.

In the company’s press release, Bolt assured his allegiance to Puma because of their support for him before he became a star at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.
