Conference Recap..a weekend of action..

One by one the team line up each runner is edging the line like a greyhound waiting at the gate ready to chase the rabbit. This is one of their last challenges for the season. The conference race does not determine if one moves on or not to the regional meet. The conference race is to see where the team and individuals measure up this deep into the season. It is to see if there is anything left to tweak in the final weeks up to regional meet. The conference meet most of all is for bragging rights until the next season. The following will have bragging rights till next season.
California Collegiate Athletic Association
Chico State’s men captured the California Collegiate Athletic Association team title with 20 points placing six runners in the top seven spots at the conference meet this Saturday held on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus. Cal State Stanislaus finished second with 67 points. Cal State Stanislaus’s Vincente Moreno won the individual title with the time of 24:48 covering an 8k course over Chico State’s Michael Wickham who finished in 25:07.
Cal State L.A.’s women took five of the top eight places to capture the women’s California Collegiate Athletic Association team title with 24 points over Chico State who had 50 points. Cal State L.A.’s Karla Alburez won the individual title with a time of 20:55 over the 6k course over UC San Diego’s Diane Dunn who had the time of 21:01.
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
Felician College’s men’s team won their fourth straight conference title this Saturday at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia with 22 points over Philadelphia who had 53 points. Felician’s Paul Chegwidden won the individual title in a time of 25:34 over the 8k course and was nearly 54 seconds faster than the second place finisher Philadelphia’s Shawn D'Andrea with a time of 27:38.
Georgian Court University’s women’s team won their second straight title with 57 points ahead of Felician College who had 72 points. Georgian Court’s Heather Miara won the individual title with a course record of 19:23 over the 5k course. She defeated USP’s Joy Aifuwa by four seconds; Joy ran a 19:27.
Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association
Virginia State’s men’s team won its first ever conference championship placing five runners in the top eleven and finishing with 40 points. Shaw finished second with 71 points and only one point over Saint Augustine's who was third with 72 points. Ken Samoei won the men's individual title in 25:05 over an 8k course. Geoffrey Langat of Virginia Union finished second in 25:48. Saint Augustine’s women won the conference title. They placed 5 runners in the top 10 and scored 26 points. Virginia State placed second with 60 points. Saint Augustine’s Erica Young won the individual title completing the 5k course in 20:08 over teammate Sharona Brown who ran a 20:26. Conference Carolinas
Queens University’s men’s team scored 45 points, 15 points ahead of Lees-McRae’s men to capture the conference title. Queen’s Daniel Kanyaruhuru ran a 24:18 to claim his first individual conference title over the 8k course at Milliken Coporate Park in Spartanburg, SC. Anderson University’s Jennifer Hitt won her fourth consecutive individual conference title by finishing the 5k course in 19:05 over teammate Diana Willard who ran a 19:11. Lee McRae’s women finished with a team score of 51 points defeating Anderson University by 27 points to capture the women’s team conference title. Coach Craig McPhail said “This is a special team, with a lot of goal oriented women who are doing their best to be the best they can be.†East Coast Conference
The NYIT men’s cross country team captured its first conference championship with a score of 30 points Sunday morning at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. NYIT’s Evans Kigen captured the individual title running the 8k distance in 26:23. Adelphi’s Matt Dispensa finished second with a time of 27:13. The Adelphi University women’s cross country team garnered a race low 31 points in placing five runners in the top 10 to capture their second straight conference title. Adelphi’s Ify Anene captured the individual title by running a 19:21 over the 5k course. New Haven’s Melissa Tempesta finished second in 20:12. Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Grand Valley State’s men’s team took the conference title with a low score of 19 points, placing their top five in the top seven. Wayne State came in second with 81 points. Grand Valley State’s Nate Peck finished the 8k course in 25:21 to take the individual title over teammate Robbie Young who finished n 25:41. Grand Valley State’s women’s team turned in just as impressive performance as their men’s team by taking the conference title with a score of 20 points, placing their top five in the top six. Wayne State University came in second in 82 points. Wayne State’s Rachelle Malette took the individual title in 22:00 over the 6k course. Southern Indiana’s men took the team title this weekend in Indianapolis, IN. They finished with 41 points ahead of Northern Kentucky who finished with 66 points. Southern Indiana’s Paul Jellema took the individual title finishing the 8k course in 24:48 over his teammate, Tim Sirbeck who finished in 25:16. Wisconsin Parkside’s women captured the team conference title with 46 points over Southern Indiana who had 75 points. Wisconsin Parkside’s Jessica Lamp took the individual title with a 21:38 over the 6k course. Her teammate Naomi Fulton finished 10 seconds behind her with a 21:48 for a second place finish. Western Washington’s men captured the men’s team title with 35 points this weekend at West Park in Nampa, Idaho this Saturday. Western Oregon finished second with 67 points. SMU’s John Riak took command in the final 2,000 meters to win his first conference individual title finishing the 8k course in 24:56. WWU’s Daniel Phillips and Bennett Grimes finished second and third in the times of 25:05 and 25:09 in the 8k race. Seattle Pacific’s Jessica Pixler led her team to the women’s team title for the third year in a row and they finished with 24 points over Western Washington with 99 points. Jessica Pixler successful defended her individual title with a new course record of 20:53 over the 6k course. Her teammate Jane Larson finished second with a time of 21:45. Gulf South Conference
The University of Alabama in Huntsville won its first men’s conference title this Saturday at Veteran’s Park in Hoover, AL with 40 points. They splintered Harding’s streak of seven straight titles; Harding finished second with 48 points. Harding's James Cheruiyot took top honors finishing the 8k course in a time of 25:35. UAH’s Brandon York placed second in a time of 26:26. The Harding women took their third straight team conference title edging The University of Alabama Huntsville by merely one point scoring 31 points to UAH’s 32. Harding’s Janee Jones captured the individual title with a time of 18:08 over the 5k course. UAH’s duo of Caitlin Heider (18:34) and Erin Zellars (18:39) rounded out the top three. The Dallas Baptist University’s men captured an unlikely conference title this past Saturday with 44 points over Newman College who had 66 points. Dallas Baptist came into the meet picked to finished second but a very strong performance by Felix Rodriguez helped push them to the top. Rodriguez (25:59) was second to St. Edward’s David Fuentas who completed the 8k course in 25:43. Not to be outdone by their men’s team, The Dallas Baptist Univeristy’s women captured the conference title placing three girls in the top eight. They finished with 39 points over Incarnate Word who had 45 points. Incarnate Word’s Yvonne Rodriguez took an early lead and finished 36 second ahead of Lincoln’s Kaydian Howell. Rodriguez ran a 17:56 for the 5k course. Lone Star Conference
Abilene Christian took home four conference titles this past Saturday at Eddie Moore Park in Commerce, Texas. In the men’s race, Abilene Christian’s Serge Gasore finished in a photo finish over his teammate Julius Nyango with a time of 24:47.79 over Nyango’s 24:47.82 over the 8k course. Abilene Christian’s top four finished in one thru four, they went out quickly and established a five minute pace. Abilene Christian finished with 23 points over East central who had 64 points. This was the program’s 17th straight title. Abilene Christian’s (53 points) women beat out Tarleton State University (84 points) to win their seventh straight conference title. Abilene Christian’s Loice Cheboi won the women’s individual title with a time of 22:04 for a 6k over East Central’s Betty Hernandez who ran a 22:34. Abilene Christian’s Mary Mwangi finished a strong third despite swollen tonsils and finished with a time of 22:44. Cheboi led the entire race and was never really pushed. Missouri Southern’s men won their third straight MIAA cross country championship Saturday (Oct. 20) at Kirksville Country Club. They placed 3 in the top ten including taking the first two places. The Lions scored 40 points; 18 points ahead of Southwest Baptist in second place. Missouri Southern’s Dustin Dixon took top honors running the 8k course in 26:07 over his teammate and other Dustion, Dustin Millar who ran a 26:15. Missouri Southern’s women also captured the conference title with 43 points over Pittsburg State who had 75. Emporia State’s Jonel Rossbach won the individual title with a time of 22:06 and nearly 30 seconds over Missouri Southern’s Kimi Shank who finished in a 22:42 over a 6k course. North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Despite receiving 4.5 inches of rain on the Thursday before the meet and having to reconfigure the course, North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meet ended up running very well. Minnesota State men’s claimed the conference team title scoring 24 points over Augustana who scored 62 points. Minnesota Duluth rounded out the top three with 67 points. Minnesota State’s Denise Mokaya won the individual title with a time of 24:46 over the 8k course defeating his teammate James Krajsa who ran a 24:51. Augustana’s women’s proved they deserved their 5th place national ranking by placing all five scorers in the top 12 to capture the conference title with 36 points. North Dakota came in second with 61 points with only a one point margin of victory over South Dakota with 62 points. Augustana’s Rachel Stangler won the individual title with a time of 21:39 over the 6k course over South Dakota’s Kavan Ramsey who had a 21:43. Northeast 10 Conference
In an odd occurrence Stonehill and UMass Lowell tied for first for the Men’s conference title this weekend at Stonehill College, both scoring 35 points. UMass Lowell’s Stephen DeWitt won the individual title in the time of 25:07 over an 8k course. He won over his teammate Ruben Sanca who ran a 25:21. Head Coach Gary Gardner of UMass Lowell said “My top three men ran very well and our 4-9 guys struggling a bit compared to two week ago. Our training for both squads (men and women) is in the correct spot and hopefully both teams can come together in the next weeks.†Stonehill’s women won the conference title this weekend with 38 points placing their top 5 in the top 15 over UMass Lowell’s women who had 48 points. Bryant’s Nicole Radzik won the individual title with a time of 18:28 over a 5k course beating Bentley’s Melissa Nash who ran an 18:46. Head Coach Karen Boen of Stonehill commented “The Stonehill team is very young and really came together as a unit with the support of a home crowd†and further said “Every year it is a true rivalry and this year was no different.†Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
The MSU Moorhead men’s and women’s cross country teams took home top honors in Winona, Minn. The men won with 38 points over Wayne State who had 64 points. The women won their second title as they edged last year champions of Wayne State by a score of 50-55. The men’s individual title went to Nate Preston of Wayne State who ran the 8k course in the time of 25:50 over MSU Moorhead’s Kyle Eckhoff who ran a 26:00. The women’s individual title went to MSU Moorhead’s Anna Vanwechel who ran the 6k course in 22:34 beating Wayne State’s Megan Zavorka by 14 seconds. Peach Belt Conference
For the second consecutive year, the Columbus State men’s and women’s teams took the Peach Belt Conference at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, GA. The men edged out Clayton state by 6 points scoring 41 points to Clayton’s 47 points. Columbus State had four men in the top ten.Clayton State’s Walid Berkedle won the 8k course in 26:43, 11 seconds over CSUâ€Âs Tim Engish. Columbus State’s women won their third straight title placing three runners in the top five. They scored 39 points beating host Augusta State who was second with 46 points. Columbus’s Isabel Speer covered the very hilly 5k in 20:02 beating Augusta State’s Jenafer Forward who was second with 20:30. Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference
The Adams State College teams swept both the team and individual titles for the second time in three years at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships hosted by Fort Lewis College in nearly perfect weather conditions at Hillcrest Golf Course. The men’s team finished with 33 points over Western State College with 44 points. Aaron Braun won the individual title with a time of 25:16 only a second over Western State’s Scott Dahlberg. The women’s team posted a score of 22 points to win the team title to beat out Western State who had 50 points. Brittany Somers beat out 99 runners to claim the individual title and finished the 6k course in 22:33.50 barely beating CSU - Pueblo’s Lauren Dunsmoor who ran a 22:33.96. South Atlantic Conference
Mars Hill’s men put in a dominating performance this Saturday in Salisbury, NC to earn the conference team title. They placed 8 in the top 15 and finished with 23 points over Lincoln Memorial who had 63 points. Wingate’s Jayce Watson put in an impressive performance running a 25:06 over the all terrain 8k course. Mars Hill’s Kit Powell came in second with a time of 25:13. “It was a good race, a very fast course. I really enjoyed it, the openness was. It was nice to see everyone. Overall it was a real great day. I was very proud of my team. I believe our top seven PRed.†Jayce commented on the race. The Wingate women had 51 points to top runner-up Lenoir-Rhyne, who had 80 points to win the SAC conference team championship. Carson Newman’s Aubrey Morris won the women’s individual title with a time of 19:13 over the 5k course. She finished nearly 28 seconds ahead of Keely Hollahan, of Mars Hill, who was second at 19:41. “As a team, we have been working towards conference the whole season. Florida Southern College men’s team were crowned conference champions this weekend at The Abbey Tavern Golf Course. They placed five in the top ten and scored 26 points. University of Tampa came in second with 42 points. Florida Southern’s Luke Beevor ran a 26:30 to win the individual title over an 8k course. Tampa’s Tony Nicolosi came in second with a time of 26:35. The University of Tampa women’s team took home the team title with a low score of 18 points. They placed their top seven in the top twelve. Flordia Southern College was second with 53 points. Tampa’s Laura Woznicki turned in a dominating performance winning conference in 21:38 for a 6k course defeating teammate Jessica Forrester who ran a 22:21. West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic
Concord’s men placed five runners in top ten to take the conference team title over West Virginia Wesleyan. Concord scored 37 points to West Virginia Wesleyan 59 points. West Virginia Wesleyan’s Eric Cooper defended his individual title with a 26:08 over an 8k course. Seton Hill’s Julian Fiorina placed second with a time of 26:53. West Virginia Wesleyan’s women had three finishers in the top six to take the conference team title over Wheeling Jesuit 37-61. Seton Hill’s Anna Cote completed the 6k course in 23:58 over Wesleyan’s Allison Teter at 24:06 to take the individual title. Seton Hill head coach Tim Creamer praised Cote on her race “Anna is a tremendous talent and we’re lucky to have her at Seton Hill. Brittany Somers beat out 99 runners to claim the individual title and finished the 6k course in 22:33.50 barely beating CSU - Pueblo’s Lauren Dunsmoor who ran a 22:33.96. South Atlantic Conference
Mars Hill’s men put in a dominating performance this Saturday in Salisbury, NC to earn the conference team title. They placed 8 in the top 15 and finished with 23 points over Lincoln Memorial who had 63 points. Wingate’s Jayce Watson put in an impressive performance running a 25:06 over the all terrain 8k course. Mars Hill’s Kit Powell came in second with a time of 25:13. “It was a good race, a very fast course. I really enjoyed it, the openness was. It was nice to see everyone. Overall it was a real great day. I was very proud of my team. I believe our top seven PRed.†Jayce commented on the race. The Wingate women had 51 points to top runner-up Lenoir-Rhyne, who had 80 points to win the SAC conference team championship. Carson Newman’s Aubrey Morris won the women’s individual title with a time of 19:13 over the 5k course. She finished nearly 28 seconds ahead of Keely Hollahan, of Mars Hill, who was second at 19:41. “As a team, we have been working towards conference the whole season. Florida Southern College men’s team were crowned conference champions this weekend at The Abbey Tavern Golf Course. They placed five in the top ten and scored 26 points. University of Tampa came in second with 42 points. Florida Southern’s Luke Beevor ran a 26:30 to win the individual title over an 8k course. Tampa’s Tony Nicolosi came in second with a time of 26:35. The University of Tampa women’s team took home the team title with a low score of 18 points. They placed their top seven in the top twelve. Flordia Southern College was second with 53 points. Tampa’s Laura Woznicki turned in a dominating performance winning conference in 21:38 for a 6k course defeating teammate Jessica Forrester who ran a 22:21. West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic
Concord’s men placed five runners in top ten to take the conference team title over West Virginia Wesleyan. Concord scored 37 points to West Virginia Wesleyan 59 points. West Virginia Wesleyan’s Eric Cooper defended his individual title with a 26:08 over an 8k course. Seton Hill’s Julian Fiorina placed second with a time of 26:53. West Virginia Wesleyan’s women had three finishers in the top six to take the conference team title over Wheeling Jesuit 37-61. Seton Hill’s Anna Cote completed the 6k course in 23:58 over Wesleyan’s Allison Teter at 24:06 to take the individual title. Seton Hill head coach Tim Creamer praised Cote on her race “Anna is a tremendous talent and we’re lucky to have her at Seton Hill.
