The Week Ahead
I want to recap a few times Kim Smith’s 4:24 mile and Yelena Soboleva’s 1.56:49 800m and 3.58:05 1500m WR are just amazing! This year will be one for the record books. Look for more of these top performances in the near future. Last weekend I had the opportunity to go down to Tallahassee, Florida to interview Zap Fitness and other pro runners. Listening to what they had to say about running was amazing and inspiring at the same time. Here is a group of men and women coming together to keep the dream alive and three of their guys are heading to USA Cross Country Championships this weekend in San Diego and that is awesome. Good Luck Zap! There is plenty of other action this weekend the 2008 AT&T Austin Marathon will feature a team like challenge with two men and women competing against other countries scoring points for a team title. Teams from United States, Canada, Mexico and Great Britain will be making an appearance. “The AT&T International Marathon Challenge is an exciting way to bridge the world to Texas through sport. We are very pleased to host these countries in an Olympic year where our race will mirror what the world will see in Beijing in the summer of ‘08”, said AT&T Austin Marathon Race Director, John Conley. (Letsrun.com) The biggest meet however this weekend will be the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas. This meet will be featuring some of the world’s best professionals and collegiate runners over a two-day schedule. Expect some fast times to come out of this meet especially from the 200 meter race. It will feature the American record holder Wallace Spearmon(20.10) and the world leader Rubin Williams of Tennessee(20.66). Spearmon goal is to break his own 200 meter American record in his first indoor meet of the season. "I'm going to try and break my own American record," Spearmon said at a Monday press conference that included representatives from meet sponsor Tyson Foods. "And if I can do it just perfect, I'm going to try to break this world record (19. 92) held by Frankie Fredericks (of Namibia)." (nwanews.com) Other meets this weekend will include Norwich Union Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham, which will not feature Dwain Chambers although he was picked to the British World Indoor team. On the college side the highlighted meets will include Boise State Team Invite, Indiana Hoosier Hills, MEAC Championships, Missouri Southern Radio Shack Invite, UNC Chick-fil-A Invite, and the Washington Husky Classic. Good luck to all the teams competing this weekend be safe and run fast! Always make sure to check out the News and Results on the Flotrack Website for any extra information!
