Indoor DII conference recaps

All of the Division II conferences wrapped up their indoor meets this past weekend. These meets were one of the last chances athletes had to tune and hone their skills before the Indoor National Championships on March 14, 2008. Below, I have highlighted some of the more note worthy match-ups. I have provided the link with complete results for every meet, which follow my recaps.
Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association The CIAA conference meet was held at Christopher Newport University in Virginia on February 10. The St. Augustine’s men and women teams won the team titles.
In the women’s long jump finals, St. Augustine’s Treva Hutchinson jumped 5.84 meters to take home first over Bowie’s DaMara Parrish, who jumped 5.73. In the women’s 60 meter dash, St. Augustine’s Barbara Pierre ran 7.52 over Bowie’s DaMara Parrish who ran a 7.64. In the women’s 400 meter dash, St. Augustine’s Erica Young beat teammate Kyra Mobley by running 56.24 to Mobley’s 57.72
St. Augustine dominated the men’s 60 meter hurdles with Dior Lowry winning the race with a time of 8.06 and Jermaine Baker finishing just behind him in 8.24. In the men’s 60 meter dash finals, only a millisecond separated first and second. St. Augustine’s Dennis Boone ran 6.79, while Bowie State’s Dion Rodriquez ran 6.80. In the men’s 400m dash, Johnson C. Smith’s Leford Green ran 48.15 to beat St. Augustine’s Randy Curry,who ran 49.21
Great Northwest Athletic Conference The GNAC conference meet was held at the Jackson Track in the Idaho Center on February 16. In the team title competition, Seattle Pacific’s women continued their five year winning streak scoring 183 points to Western Washington’s 109. Western Oregon took the men’s team title, their first since 2004, scoring 178 points over Western Washington’s 113.5.
Seattle Pacific’s sophomore stud, Jessica Pixler swept the women’s mile and 800 meters, running 4:50. 38. and 2:10.18 respectively. Her teammate, Mellisa Peaslee, won the pole vault with a height of 12-9. In the 400 meter dash only a millisecond separated Northwest Nazarene’s Elisa Decker (58.21) and Seattle Pacific’s Teona Golding (58.22). In the women’s 5000 meter run, Seattle Pacific’s Jane Larson took top honors with a time of 17:39. Seattle Pacific’s 4X400m women’s team were a mere second off of the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time with their time of 3:57.36. Their DMR did, however, hit the provisional qualifying time by running 12:04.81.
Northwest Nazarene’s Greg Hamm won the men's triple jump (47-5 1/4) for the third year in a row. He is the third male athlete in the meet’s history to win the same event three [consecutive?] times. Men’s meet records were set by Western Oregon’s Ashtin Mott, who ran 7.02 in the 60 meter dash, and Central Washington’s Matt Rogstad, who ran 49.58 in the 400 meter race. It was a tight race in the men’s mile with St .Martin’s John Riak outrunning Seattle Pacific’s Brian Cronrath, 4:21.50 to 4:21.86.
Northeast-10 Conference The Northeast 10 was held on February 23. In the quest for the team title boththe men’s and women’s teams of Southern Connecticut State were victorious. The women’s team scored 237 points over UMass Lowell, who scored 169.50. The men’s team scored 202 point over Stonehill, who scored 131 points.
Southern Connecticut State’s Symone Wong won both the women’s 55 meters (7.20) and the 200 meters (25.85). UMass Lowell’s Amanda Sousa barely beat teammate Lyra Clark for the 1000m title; Sousa running 3:05.65 to Clark’s 3:06.13. Stonehill’s DMR team (Lindsey Booth, Katrina Harkins, Amanda Carnevale, and Kelly O’Toole) ran an impressive time of 12:55.13, taking the team title.
Stonehill’s Keith Gill narrowly beat Bentley’s Dan Darcy for the 800 meters conference title. Gill ran 1:57.18 and Darcy 1:57.98. Stonehill’s Kevin Gill won the 1000 meters with a time of 2:29.92. Southern Connecticut State’s McNeil Johnson won the men’s 55 meter hurdles with the time of 7.58. It was a close race in the men’s DMR with Stonehill ( Matthew Meager, Nathan Morse, Matthew Klingman and Kevin Gill) running10:32.20 over UMass Lowell’s team (no names given), which ran 10:35.45.
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Despite power rankings, Grand Valley’s men and women took home the team titles this weekend, both besting Ashland the squads. Grand Valley’s women scored 188.5 points to Ashland’s 107. The men’s team scored 199.66 points over Ashland, who scored 147 points.
Findlay’s Pamela Bullocktook the double title in the women’s 55 meter dash (7.11) and 200 meter dash (25.00). In the women’s 400m dash, Ashland’s Steph Tinney took first place with a time of 57.06 over Hillsdale’s Marta Scheiwe, who ran 57.37. Grand Valley’s Katherine McCarthy took top honors in the women’s 800 meter run with a time of 2.13.49 over Findlay’s Kristi Comstock,who ran 2.15.05. Grand Valley’s duo of Kelly Gibbons and Katie Alfredson took first and second in the mile, running 5:04.68 and 5:06.08 respectively. Their teammate, Megan Maceratini, won the 5000 meters with a time of 17.40.35. Findlay’s Kirby Blackley set a meet record in the 55 meter hurdles with the time of 7.76. She also won the long jump with a jump of 5.87 meters.
Hillsdale’s Jared Krout had a double victory in the men’s 200 meters (21.86) and 400 meters (49.25). Grand Valley’s duo of Nate Peck and Nick Polk took first and second in the mile, running 4:14.54 and 4:16.62 respectively. Nick Polk doubled back to win the 5000 meters in a time of 14:46.20, followed closely by teammate James Gale,who ran 14:50.43. Grand Valley’s Bryant Wilson won the men’s pole vault with a vault of 5.05 meters.
Great Lakes Valley Conference The GLVC conference meet was held this past weekend at Wabash College. Southern Illinois-Edwardsville took both the men’s and women’s team title. The women scored 270 points over Lewis University, which scored 91.5 points. The men scored 224 points over University of Indianapolis who scored 144 points.
In the women’s 200 meters, Southern Illinois – Edwardsville’s Shelinda Brackett took first place with a time of 25.07 over teammate Deserea Brown ,who ran 25.27. Wisconsin-Parkside’s Jessica Lamp won the women’s 800 meter in a time of 2:12.74 over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville’s Coreen Ellis, who ran 2:13.14. Wisconsin-Parkside’s Naomi Fulton captured the women’s mile title, barely beating teammate Jessica Lamp by running 4:55.04 to Lamp’s 4:55.57.
Indianapolis’s Anthony Flournoy won the men’s 200m with the time of 21.97. In the men’s 800 meter run, Lewis’s Adrian Myers won with the time of 1:54.08 over Bellarmine’s Joseph Blue,who ran 1:57.72. Southern Illinois-Edwardsville’s 4 X 400m team (Marcus Evans, Nich Harold, Chris Wright, and Kyle Rose) won with a fast time of 3:17.88.
Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association The MIAA conference meet was held last weekend at Missouri Southern State University. In the men’s team title competition, Central Missouri took top prize with 120 points to Missouri Southern’s 96 points. In the women’s team title competition, Missouri Southern won with 118 points over Emporia State ’s 102 points.
Emporia State’s Jonel Rossbach won the women’s 5000 meters with the time of 17:24.79, outperforming Missouri Southern’s Kimi Shank, who ran a 17:29.65. Rossbach doubled back to win the mile in a time of 5:03. Missouri Southern’s Jessica Selby-Tallman won the weight throw (17.33 meters) and shot-put (51 feet and 9 inches).
Emporia State’s Kenton Lonberger won both the men’s 60 meter dash (6.81) and 200m (21.83). In the men’s 60 meter hurdles, Pittsburg State’s duo of Jeremy Jackson and Jeremy Dunkle took the top two spots, Jackson running 8.03 and Dunkle 8.10. It was a tight race in the men’s DMR with Pittsburg State (Mujahid Hassaballa, Anthony Garrett, James Ward and Tim Testa) running 10:17.40 over Southwest Baptist University’s (Shawn Etzenhouser, Erik Johnson, Nathaniel Rogers, and Michael Pierce) 17:18.61.
North Central Conference The NCC conference meet was held last weekend at Minnesota State. Minnesota State University-Mankato took home the men’s conference team title with 284 points over South Dakota, which scored 148 points. South Dakota’s women took home the conference team title with 192 points over Minnesota State University-Mankato‘s 162 points.
MSU-Mankato’s Katelin Rains won the pole vault with a vault of 4.07 meters over teammate Lauren Stelten,who vaulted 3.97 meters. MSU-Mankato’s Brittany Henderson hit the automatic qualifying mark in the 60 meter dash preliminaries by running a 7.53. She went on to win the 60 meter dash with a time 7.58. Nebraska – Omaha’s Pinar Saka won the 400m with a time of 55.74. In the women’s 800 meter run, South Dakota’s Emma Erikson ran 2:12.78 beating MSU-Mankato’s Jenny Goesch, who ran a 2:16.07. It was a close race in the 200 meter dash between Pinar Saka and Brittany Henderson. Saka defeated Henderson by running 24.54 over Henderson’s 24.58. South Dakota’s Ramsey Kavan won the women’s mile in a time of 5:01.
South Dakota’s Terry Liggens won the men’s 60 meter hurdles in the time of 7.97. In the men’s 800 meter run, MSU-Mankato’s Denise Mokaya won with a time of 1:53.71 over Minnesota-Duluth’s Jared Clementson, who ran a 1:53.92. The men’s 200 meter dash was a tight contest between MSU-Mankato’s Nate Pieper and Emmanuel Asamoa and South Dakota’s Dominic Artis. Pieper finished first with a time of 22.06, Asamoa was second with 22.08, and Artis was third with 22.11.
Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference It was a clean sweep for the University of Mary men’s and women’s teams as both squads claimed 2008 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference team indoor titles. The women’s team scored 177 points over Minnesota State University –Moorhead, which had 131 points. The men’s team score 127 points over Northern State, which scored 111.5 points. This is the second straight year the U-Mary women have won the team title. It is the first NSIC title for the men’s team. While the women were the defending champion and expected to be in the running, the men’s title was a complete reversal from 2007. Last season, the men’s squad finished last in the conference meet.
In the women’s 400 meter dash, University of Mary’s Cassie Blazer ran a time of 57.50 over Bemidji State’s Kristi Buerkle, who ran 57.69. MSU-Moorhead’s Ashley Roemer won the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:16. University of Mary’s Cassie Blazer took second with 2:18.
In the men’s 200 meter run, Concordia’s Kawaskii Bacon ran 22.05, outperforming Northern State’s Jake Hamik ,who ran 22.54. In the 55 meter hurdles, University of Mary’ Jesse Piper ran 7.58 to win over Northern State’s Jake Hamik, who ran 7.68. Bemidji State’s Joe Remitz won the men’s weight throw with a throw of 18.57 meters.
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference The RMAC conference meet was held last weekend in Kearney, Nebraska. Adams State’s women won the team competition with 195 points over Western State, which scored 143 points. First and second were reversed in the men’s title competition with Western scoring 184 points over Adams State, which scored 155.5 points.
Adams State’s Indira Spence won both the women’s 200 meters (24.79) and the 60 meter hurdles (8.57). Her teammate, Sherline Duncan, won the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.512 over Spence, who ran 7.520. Adams State’s Sofia Monroe won the women’s 800m in 2:15.54 over Nebraska Kearney’s Michelle Dill,who ran a 2:17.14. Adam State’s Tanya Gaurmer won the women’s mile in a time of 4:55.57 followed by Western State’s Agnes Kroneraff, who ran 4:56.75. In the women’s long jump, Nebraska Kearney’s Kelli Dring jumped 5.85 meters to take home the conference title.
Adams State’s Corey Lenaris won the 60 meter dash in a time of 6.81. Earlier in the competition, Lenaris ran 6.77, thus hitting the automatic qualifying mark for Indoor Nationals. His teammate, Nick Lara, ran 1:51.99 to win the men’s 800 meters. Western State’s Scott Dahlberg and Kris Berry took first and second in the mile, running 4:13.35 and 4:13.66, respectively. The whole field provisionally qualified in the 5000 meters, with Western State’s Ian Donnan taking first in a time of 14:49.08. It was a tight race in the men’s DMR with only milliseconds separating first and second. Adams State’s team (Nick Lara, Alex Ponce, Corey De La Cruz and Reuben Chebon-Mwei) edged out Western State’s team (Tyler Pennel, Andy Crook, Kris Berry and Scott Dahlberg) by running 10:03.21 to Western State’s 10:03.83.
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference The PSAC conference meet was held last weekend at East Stroudsburg University. In an odd occurrence, Slippery Rock’s women’s team tied with Shippenburg’s women’s team for the conference title. Both scored 110 points. Slippery Rock’s men won the men’s team title with 116.5 points over Shippenburg, which scored 113 points.
The women’s 400 meter dash was close competition between Shippenburg’s Erica Hess and Slippery Rock’s Lacey Cochran. Hess came out on top with the time of 57.45 outrunning Cochran who ran 57.49. The top three runners in the women’s 800m run were very close. It ended up being California PA.’s Holly Urban running a 2:14.06 over Millersville’s Priscilla Jennings (2:14.32) and Shippenburg’s Mary Dell (2:14.63). Jennings went on to win the mile in the time of 5:03 over Dell who ran 5:06.
In the men’s 55 meter, Slippery Rock’s Brad Mueller ran 6.33. In the men’s mile, Mansfield’s Chris Cummings ran 4:11.84 followed by East Stroudsburg’s Iuri Pinto (4:13.59) and Lock Haven’s Brandon Pomerantz (4:14.70). The men’s 55 meter hurdles was a fast race with West Chester’s Jarret Eaton running 7.31 followed by East Stroudsburg’s Russell Smith (7.51).
